Heavenly view

15 Jan 2008 140
A friend had very generously invited me to go along with him two days ago, exploring the area south of the city, in the Porcupine Hills, Foothills and Nanton area. The weather was incredible and the scenery breath-taking! Everything from flat grassland, to rolling hills and the Foothills, to the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. You can see where the Foothills meet the mountains in this photo.

American Dipper

A friend had very generously invited me to go along with him yesterday, exploring the area south of the city, in the Porcupine Hills, Foothills and Nanton area. The weather was incredible and the scenery breath-taking! Everything from flat grassland, to rolling hills and the Foothills, to the mountains. There were occasionally small patches of open water and we were lucky enough to see four American Dippers at various places. A small bird seen from a long distance = a heavily cropped photo that is STILL distant : ) The American Dipper is uncommon to common year-round in Alberta. The Dipper's stout body, strong claws and thick feathers enable it to survive in frigid weather.

Eastern edge of the Rockies

The weather was incredible and the scenery breath-taking! Everything from flat grassland, to rolling hills and the Foothills, to the eastern edge of the mountains. You can see the very eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains in this photo. At the foot of this slope, the rolling Foothills begin. This particular road, Kananaskis Road, was very interesting.

As you can see in this photo, it doesn't look like winter at all in the rolling hills. (Snow next week?). We saw: 2 Golden Eagles 50 Wild Turkeys, approx. 1 Northern Shrike 4 American Dippers Eurasian Collared Doves, several Snow Buntings, 1 flock 1 Great Horned Owl 1 Rough-legged Hawk 2 Gray Jays Rock Doves (Pigeons) Common Raven, many Chickadees Downy Woodpecker 1 White-breasted Nuthatch Magpies, plenty House Sparrows Mule Deer White-tailed Deer 1 Moose 1 Coyote
