This is a macro shot of an Anemone sylvestris, also known as Windflower Plant and Snowdrop Anemone. Taken at the Reader Rock Garden on 5 June 2013. Maybe I'll add a photo of a whole flower in the comment box. I overslept this morning - again! Just realized (at noon) that it was the Calgary Stampede Parade this morning! I'm sure it went well - but nothing would make me get down there to watch it in person again. The first few years after we arrived in Calgary 35 years ago, of course we took our kids to sit at the edge of the street to watch, but it's so much less hassle to watch it on TV, lol. I'm sure Mayor Nenshi led the parade with great pride - he has been just remarkable during our State of Emergency due to the Flood of the Century. I know his pride will come from the incredible people of Calgary, including the various branches of Emergency Responders right down to the individual citizens, home and business owners and all the tireless volunteers who have got this city through such a major disaster. Still a long, long way to go yet, needless to say. My hat's off to each and every one of them!

Crepe-paper petals

My mind has gone blank and I can't think what kind of flower this is! Some kind of Anemone? Photographed at the Reader Rock Garden on 5 June 2013. Later: this is Anemone sylvestris (Windflower Plant), Snowdrop Anemone. www.flickr.com/photos/annkelliott/9173986795

Red-blue Checkered Beetle on Anemone

06 Jul 2008 182
I went for just a local walk today. Saw all sorts of things, but it was one of those walks where photo after photo was missed, when an insect flew away too quickly or a little bird was hidden by leaves. Fortunately, this brightly coloured beetle DID cooperate. Can't give an ID, so just enjoy its colours and pattern : )

Waiting ....

I haven't heard whether anyone has seen a first Prairie Crocus in bloom yet, this spring. They can be seen as early as mid-March, but more often closer to the end of March, I believe. This image was taken on 26 April 2011, probably at Sandy Beach, Calgary.

Anemone

Photographed at the Reader Rock Garden on October 13th. We all need "warmth" today - it's -16C (-24C with windchill) and it snowed again overnight and this morning. Stay warm, everyone! Lol, I finally woke up just after noon today, after almost 11 hours of sleep. The past month, I've kind of been living on both Canada time and English time, which doesn't work too well : ) Important, sometimes urgent, e-mails would arrive maybe 1:00 a.m. or 2:00 a.m. and I would stay up answering them, doing research on certain things before replying. I've been getting to bed often anywhere between 3:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.! So, a good, long sleep felt very nice this morning : ) Can you imagine having a friend(s) who is taking photos of all my Brother's belongings (this also includes many things that belonged to my parents, too), and sending them all to me so that I can let her know which things I'd like her to keep for me, to be shipped later? Well, needless to say, I am SO fortunate to have a friend like this! Add to that my other long-time friends in Birmingham who are seeing to all the other endless things that have to be done when a death occurs. I am so thankful every day for friends like these! My Brother's funeral will be held this coming Thursday, February 3rd (in Birmingham, England). Seeing his Obituary in the Newspaper made it all feel so very final.

Drooping Japanese Anemone

I was a little bit too late to catch these pretty Japanese Anemones in prime condition a second time, but I thought the overlapping petals were still pretty. Seen at the Calgary Zoo on 6th October last year.

Japanese Anemone

I'd never even heard of a Japanese Anemone until I wandered round the Calgary Zoo gardens on 14th September and came across this one. "A classic botanical misnomer, Japanese anemones aren't really Japanese at all—in fact, they were developed about 125 years ago by nurserymen in England, France and Germany, who used several Chinese species (Anemone vitifolia and A. hupehensis var. japonica) to create what we now know as A. x hybrida—an entirely man-made plant, despite its simple, unaffected appearance." From www.canadiangardening.com .

Japanese Anemone

I'd never heard of Japanese Anemones till a month or two ago, when I saw them in the Dorothy Harvie Gardens at the Calgary Zoo. On my last visit, a few were still blooming. Such a pale pink with a vibrant centre. Happy Thanksgiving again to everyone!

Survival

Well, the poor Prairie Crocuses looked rather battered and droopy this morning, after the awful snow storm we had two days ago! They were all closed up, with their little fur coats - solar heating, Crocus style! "This furry little perennial is actually not a crocus, which is in the Lily family; it's really an anemone, in the Buttercup family."

I always enjoy seeing these attractive flowers. Colours vary and they always seem delicate.
