Yummy Jelly Babies
01 Mar 2014 |

Sometimes, you just have to play with your food, lol. I love these Jelly Babies and was lucky enough that my youngest daughter gave me a packet of them for Christmas. Grabbed this photo, as it caught my eye when I was looking for something with warm colours to post today.
Today, it's -26C (windchill -37C), tonight will be -32C (windchill -42C) and tomorrow morning will be -29C (windchill -38C). Am I going out this weekend? NO! We are under a Wind Chill Warning for the whole weekend, as a very cold Arctic air mass and moderate winds are giving extreme wind chill values. These -40C wind chills are being experienced by much of Alberta this weekend. At these extreme wind chill values, frostbite on exposed skin may occur in less than 10 minutes. Taken from information on the Weather Network website.
Want versus need

Feeling sorry for myself that I never see anything to photograph, I caught sight of this yummy pastry when I went grocery shopping and knew I would finally be able to use my camera! And if you believe THAT, you'll believe anything, lol!!! It was simply a case of giving into temptation. By the way, that's a saucer it's sitting on, so it was only a few mouthfuls.

A good thing I didn't eat any more of these before "playing" with them for a photo - I only just had enough left to do it, ha. Loading my three images at just before 12:45 a.m.. My three alarm clocks are set to go off at 4:10 a.m., as I have to be up and ready for a Bird Count in the Cochrane Wildlife Reserve, north west of Calgary, all day tomorrow. Next week is going to be a really busy week, with the last two Bird Counts, my new furnace, etc. being installed over two days, doctor's appointment and hopefully a birding trip to the mountains on the Saturday (if I have any energy left).
Five little Jelly Babies standing in a row

I love Jelly Babies and used to be able to buy them at Mark's & Spencers, until these stores were shut down a few years ago. My oldest daughter knows a place where you can still buy them, and so a packet was amongst her gifts to me on Christmas morning : )

Happy Halloween, to everyone who celebrates this day! These two cupcakes have been in my fridge for about three days, I think, as I thought I was going to need to take a better photo of them (i.e. without using flash). I never eat cupcakes normally, so I'm not sure just what is going to happen to these - maybe I'll take a bite and see : ) I only bought them so that I could use them for a Halloween photo, ha.
Have a safe day and evening, everyone! Please keep your eyes open for little Draculas, princesses and maybe even a few mini Lady Gagas, lol, and drive extra cautiously!
Yummy ice cream
10 Aug 2011 |
|
Just what is needed after a day of hiking! This was just a "single" - so glad I didn't ask for a "double"! Don't you just love someone who asks "Would anyone like to stop at ? and get an ice cream?"? This day, our stop was at the Boulton Creek Trading Post. Of course, I then felt desperately thirsty for the whole journey back to Calgary, ha! Enjoyed on August 7th, after hiking the Sarrail Falls trail and the Mt. Everest trail at Kananaskis Lakes, Kananaskis.
The best kind of snowflake

Seemed an appropriate day to post a photo of this yummy Rosette (Scandinavian). We are in the middle of a bad winter snow storm today, being advised not to go out unless absolutely necessary. My car is plugged in and I don't plan on going anywhere tomorrow!
"Rosettes are a thin, cookie-like deep-fried pastry of Scandinavian origin. They are traditionally made during Christmas time. Rosettes are made using intricately designed irons. The iron is heated to a very high temperature in oil, dipped into the batter, then re-immersed in the hot oil to create a crisp shell around the metal. The iron is immediately removed and the rosette is separated from the iron. Usually, the edges of the rosette are dipped into frosting or sugar. Rosette recipes are popular in the United States among families with Scandinavian ancestry." From Wikipedia.

Just couldn't resist buying one when I dashed out to do some food shopping a short while ago. I definitely do NOT need things like this, but I find that in the winter months I am far more likely to give in to temptation. And yes, I've already eaten it. My excuse this time was that when I bought one before, my photos were blurrier than I thought : )
Battenburg cake

I've been out of the house so much recently and just didn't get a chance to photograph this Battenberg cake until all I had left were two rather dry slices left, LOL!! Still tasted good though : ). Anyone else out there familiar with this ridiculously sweet cake, with marzipan round the outside and overly sweet jam gluing the quarters together : ) My mother first introduced my kids to it many, many years ago, and from time to time my daughters will buy one for me. This particular cake was given to me by my youngest daughter, Rachel (Flickr, Silver Pomegranate), when she came to Calgary from Vancouver for a short visit. It was part of my birthday present for today : )
Chocolate Checker Mousse Cake
30 Apr 2009 |
|
LOL, the reason for buying this much-too-tempting dessert was simply that I was feeling desperate to photograph something different! Too many flowers, too many owls, too many ...... The hardest part about photographing something like this delicious Chocolate Checker Mousse Cake is having to download my photos and check that at least one of the photos has come out sharp enough - and THEN I can eat it, ha, ha! I must point out, though, that it is/was only about 3" diameter!! Hundreds of calories, I'm sure, but when it comes to getting a photo, sometimes, you just have to do what you have to do! Thanks, Safeway, yet again : )
Tiramisu - Happy Easter, everyone!

This was the most delious Italian dessert - and chocolate is perfect for around Easter : ) I must admit that the reason I bought this was that I was desperate for something different to photograph, LOL. This was the prettiest thing I could find that was TINY (i.e. about 3" across). Don't need the calories, period, but most definitely don't need the calories from some regular sized dessert : ) I do have to admit one thing, though - I did buy a 3" cheese cake (like one in a photo I posted ages ago), just so that I wouldn't be tempted to eat this Tiramisu before I photographed it and then wait and check that one of the photos was sharp enough. Oh, by the way, this was bought from Safeway!!
"Tiramisu has become one of the most popular desserts served in restaurants of all types, not just Italian restaurants. The recipe has been adapted into cakes, puddings, and other varieties of dessert.
Tiramisu is made by soaking savoiardi biscuits in espresso with the optional addition of liquor and sugar, and layering them with a mixture of mascarpone cheese and zabaglione, a light custard made with Marsala wine or a liqueur. Cocoa powder is sprinkled on top of the dessert, which is refrigerated before being served." From Wikipedia.
Jelly Babies

Does anyone else know about Jelly Babies? I used to find it impossible to resist buying these when we had Marks & Spencers in the city years ago. My daughter from Vancouver (who is in Calgary for a week) had recently posted a macro of these delicious, mouth-watering candies, so I have been drooling at the thought of them. The store where one can now buy these treats is way across the city from where I live, so I never buy them. When I met my daughter at the Stampede Grounds yesterday morning, to soak up a little of the atmosphere of the Calgary Stampede, she suddenly presented me with a bag of these Jelly babies. When I got home, it was all I could do to summon up enough self-control to NOT eat them all before I had taken a few photos of them. However, I had eaten every single one before I downloaded my photos to my computer, only to discover that not a single photo was nice and sharp. This is the only one that is just about usable! Mmm ... my mouth is watering! Hope yours is, too! Thanks, Rachel!
I didn't need it - but I wanted it

Mmmm, Rum and Raisin, and Cherry!! This was a treat to myself after a 7 km hike on the Fullerton Loop, off Elbow Falls Trail. We called in at Bragg Creek, a hamlet situated just before the Elbow Falls Trail takes one into the beginning of the mountains. Unfortunately, there is a great little candy store there! So much for the calories I burned on the hike, LOL.
