Bow Valley Provincial Park

17 Jul 2009 277
A handful of us hiked this area all day yesterday and, as you can see, we were blessed with glorious weather. Bow Valley Provincial Park is a wonderful wetland area along the very eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains, and is known for it's great variety of wildflowers. The mountain peak in the centre of the photo is Mount Yamnuska, a popular ridge with rock climbers. Got my car back this afternoon and am now $836 poorer! So relieved to have it back in time to go and buy much-needed food ready for a strenuous hike tomorrow. Temperatures are supposed to hit 31C tomorrow, so I know the hike is going to be really tough going, especially as I hate the heat. However, there will be some new plants up there that I have never seen before, so I HAVE to go : )

Blades of ice

This is the reality - cold, ice, lack of sun! However, I always find the patterns made along the edges of ice really fascinating. These icy daggers had formed on the creek in Fish Creek Park, around Bebo Grove. It was such a slow morning for seeing birds (I think only 12 species), so I was happy to turn my camera on other subjects : ) View On Black

Bubbles in the stream

I was a little concerned when I first noticed these bubbles in a tiny stream deep within a woodland area at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park recently. I hadn't expected to see this, but presumably it is not a sign of lack of water health. Loved the patterns.

Winter stream

'Winter stream' On Black I always like this little spot in winter, with its winding stream and jagged edges.

Which way up?

This is what things looked like on my walk this morning. Even though the temperature was only around -11C, it was a bitter cold and I was in agony thanks to my cold hands for the first part of the walk. Does not make taking photos too pleasant!

Ice crawler

This ice formation in a stream just looked as if, at any moment, it would start crawling away.

On golden pond

Well, not exactly, as this is a creek, not a pond. This is where I was walking this morning, in around -7C temperatures. As the sun came out and it warmed a little, it really was nice walking weather. After this walk, I went to a different part of the park to check on "my" Great Horned Owl. When I parked there, I noticed a couple with a camera and tripod set up. Feeling rather rude, I walked over to them to see what they had found. "My" two owls were in a different place and they were together in the same tree, next to each other. A bit later, I noticed a young woman walking through the grove of trees where I usually see one of these owls and I told her where they were. To my surprise, she took me to see a THIRD owl there! So, now I don't know if the two together were the adults and the younger one was separate. Or maybe it was the young one sitting with one of its parents and the other adult was across the parking lot. Hmmm.... THREE - wow!
