Colours of fall

10 Sep 2008 127
A few of these Rudbeckia triloba flowers were growing in the garden close to the house on a huge acreage south of the city. Also called Brown-Eyed Susans, these plants belong to the Aster family (Asteraceae). It wasn't until I downloaded my images to my computer that I realized the colours look like those of fall.

When the petals have fallen

I've always loved the seedhead of the Gaillardia flower. Came across this one when I went for a short walk at Erlton/Roxborough Natural Area pn August 18th.

Always a joy to come across these vivid, large Common Gaillardia wildflowers. Photographed this one at Shannon Terrace, Fish Creek Park, a few days ago. Also known as Blanketflower, Brown-eyed Susan, Gaillardia and Wild Gaillardia. It is a perennial that is native to Alberta, and grows in grasslands, roadsides and in open woods throughout Southern Alberta. Flowers bloom in July and August.

Feeling the heat

Wish I could remember what these large yellow flowers are called : ). The Calgary Zoo has a whole flowerbed full of these beautiful blooms, each flower seeming to be at a different angle. I was going to say that this is rather how I feel today, after a long, hot, afternoon walk - but then I remembered you, Rebecca, dealing with even hotter temperatures! Had to smile when I saw your comment below, LOL. Thanks for the ID, Linda - Rudbeckia!
