"City of New Orleans"

22 Oct 2015 10 8 421
"City of New Orleans" was written by Steve Goodman describing a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans on the Illinois Central Railroad's City of New Orleans . The closest I can get to New Orleans is my shot of a train in Swanage railway station :-) The best known version of the song is probably the one by Arlo Guthrie but I am keeping this version for a future post :-) Added to ~ Sight and Sound I am using Steve's version from the Old Grey Whistle Test back in 1972 ♫ ♪ ♪ ♫ Listen here ~ City of New Orleans ~ Steve Goodman Another fave version for me is by The Highwaymen ♫ ♪ ♪ ♫ Listen here ~ City of New Orleans ~ The Highwaymen

"Mr Tambourine Man"

Explored! ~ Thank you very much :-))) "Take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind Past the foggy ruins of time, far past the twisted leaves Of the haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow I wanna dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands With all memory of fate driven deep beneath the waves Let me forget about today until tomorrow." I think there are enough references to frightened trees :-) the beach, the sea, the sands, the waves to use my Studland Beach photo. The arrangement of this 1984 piano based version came to Gene when he was in Hawaii recuperating from exhaustion. It is the final track on the double album “Gene Clark ~ Flying High”. Apparently, harmony vocals were by Chris Hillman and Chris was also playing bass. Of course I have original versions by Bob Dylan and by The Byrds. They are forever all-time classics. But, in my humble opinion there will never ever be anything better that Gene's version. Some of the YouTube comments say it a lot better than me - “This is the strongest version ever recorded, to be honest... Gene Clark - No Other” “Just discovered the high priceless diamond ever found! Simply haunting!!!!!!!” “I love the tempo, the harmonies, and Gene's voice, oh my goodness. Beautiful. So glad he decided to sing the extra verses” “This is simply an awesome version. The hauntingly plaintiff quality of his voice is just perfect for this song. Talk about goose-bumps” Added to ~ Sight and Sound ♫ ♪ ♪ ♫ Listen here ~ Mr Tambourine Man" ~ Gene Clark

I hope no-one wants a full explanation of what I did here :-) Anyway, this was an oil on water shot that I then messed about with in Photoshop. There could have been some posterisation goin' on...but who knows :-) I think this looks like a space-person. Actually, to me, it looks a bit feminine. But, for the purposes of 'Sight and Sound', it is goin' to have to be Mr Spaceman :-) Added to ~ Sight and Sound Listen here ♫ ♪ ♪ ♫ ~ Mr Spaceman ~ The Byrds

"Across The Great Divide"

From Wikipedia - “Sark consists of two main parts, Greater Sark and Little Sark to the south. They are connected by a narrow isthmus called La Coupée which is 300 feet (91m) long and has a drop of 330 feet (100m) on each side. Protective railings were erected in 1900; before then, children would crawl across on their hands and knees to avoid being blown over the edge.” I figure this is like crossing the Great Divide hence a tenuous link to “Across the Great Divide” written by Kate Wolf and performed here by Nanci Griffith. An easy link today methinks :-) “Train Leaves Here This Morning” written by Gene Clark and Bernie Leadon comes from the legendary album “The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark”. Gene passed away May 24, 1991 at only 46 years old Doug passed away May 16, 2012 at 75 years old RIP Gene & Doug From Wikipedia - “The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark is a country rock album by Dillard & Clark. The album was recorded in 1968, shortly after Gene Clark departed The Byrds for the second time, and Doug Dillard left The Dillards. The album is hailed by critics and musicians as a masterpiece of the country rock genre.” Added to ~ Soundtrack to Life Listen here - Train Leaves Here This Morning ~ Dillard and Clark

I need to get back over to Oxford to take more pics :-) So, in the meantime, here's another shot of Pavlína :-) Štěpán Honc (guitar, cittern) and Pavlína Bastlová (flute and vocals) have recorded two albums with the Per Kelt band from the Czech Republic. Kings Arms, Oxford

30 Oct 2013 8 6 461
I have bought myself a new 70 - 200mm lens and thought I would try it out in Oxford. I particularly wanted to photograph the writing on the side of the Kings Arms Public House plus the ‘HOLYWELL STREET’ sign to see if it was all readable @ 200mm. I was most surprised that at the very instant I pressed the shutter this young lady stopped in front of the letters O, L, Y and W and partially obscured the letters H & E and one of the L‘s. So, as well as checking out the clarity I also, accidentally, captured a candid shot :-)
