Waddesdon Manor Statues

06 Sep 2022 10 14 196
There are lots and lots of statues/sculptures in the grounds of Waddesdon Manor. I have searched the internet and, apparently, the two main figures here are Proserpina and Pluto. I thought Pluto was Mickey Mouse's pet dog but clearly that is not correct here :-) Apparently, Proserpina is the Roman goddess of agriculture and the daughter of Jupiter & Ceres. And, Pluto is the God of the Underworld. I think the small figure is a 'Triton'. Presumably, Proserpina and Pluto are in love and on this basis I have chosen "Would You Like to Learn to Dance" by Steve Goodman for 'Sight & Sound'. One of my all time favourites. Probably one of the best love songs ever written, in my opinion. "Would you like to learn to love? Well, that's somethin' else again I can show you how to sing and smile and dance Oh I have no keys to open your heart And no way that I could make you take the chance And so we'll dance around the room again And we'll sing a tune or two to pass the time And smile a lot and if you really want to We can try a little lovin', I don't mind Try a little lovin', I don't mind, I don't mind" Added to Sight and Sound : Pictures & Music ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ Listen here ~ Would You Like To Learn To Dance - Steve Goodman

This shot was taken in Amsterdam a very long time ago. I think this could have been in Vondelpark but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, there is a guy fishing and I'm guessing he is a Dutchman :-) That, of course, leads to "The Dutchman" written by Chicago-based singer/songwriter Michael Peter Smith. The song has nowt to do with fishing but it is about a Dutchman :-) Extract from Wikipedia - "Rolling Stone Magazine once called Michael Peter Smith...The greatest songwriter in the English language. He has been singing and composing since the 1960s and his rich and challenging songs have been recorded by more than 30 performers. He is best known for writing "The Dutchman" popularized by Steve Goodman and also recorded by Suzy Bogguss, Celtic Thunder, Liam Clancy, Norm Hacking, Anne Hills, Mara Levine and Si Khan, John McDermott, the New Kingston Trio, Gamble Rogers, Tom Russell, Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert James Waller, Josh White Jr. and Bernard Wrigley." I think this is an absolute classic song and it is one of my absolute all-time fave songs. My fave version is by Steve Goodman :-) Two versions follow.....one from Steve's 1972 album "Somebody Else's Troubles" and a live version (possibly from 'Austin City Limits') with Jethro Burns on mandolin. "Colorado Christmas" written by Steve Goodman ~ Looking out the window of this Hollywood hotel You'd never know that this was Christmas Eve The billboards and the neon took the place of silver bells And the temperature is 84 degrees I remember Christmases when I was just a boy In the morning I would run to see the tree And the carolers on the hillside sang their songs of Christmas joy Well, I always thought they sang them just for me Now all along the Rockies you can feel it in the air From Telluride to Boulder down below Now, the closest thing to heaven on this planet anywhere Is a quiet Christmas morning in the Colorado snow ................... I've been trying to come up with a link for “Colorado Christmas” by Steve Goodman. Okay here comes a more than slightly tenuous link for 'Sight and Sound' :-) But, I had to find a way to use (in my humble opinion) a total gem of a performance from Steve Goodman that I suddenly came across on YouTube. The song is “You're The Girl I Love”. I don't know how true it is but I read somewhere that Steve wrote this for his future wife. I am sure the guy with the pussy cat over his shoulder is wanting to say to the girl “You're The Girl I Love” hence my clever link :-) Around the time Steve's career took off he was diagnosed with leukemia. The entire time he was writing and singing he was fighting this dreadful disease. I believe he fought the battle for some 15 years. Tragically he lost the fight and he was taken from us on 20 September 1984 aged only 36 years. In my humble opinion this was one of the biggest losses to the musical world.
