"The Dutchman"

This shot was taken in Amsterdam a very long time ago. I think this could have been in Vondelpark but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, there is a guy fishing and I'm guessing he is a Dutchman :-) That, of course, leads to "The Dutchman" written by Chicago-based singer/songwriter Michael Peter Smith. The song has nowt to do with fishing but it is about a Dutchman :-) Extract from Wikipedia - "Rolling Stone Magazine once called Michael Peter Smith...The greatest songwriter in the English language. He has been singing and composing since the 1960s and his rich and challenging songs have been recorded by more than 30 performers. He is best known for writing "The Dutchman" popularized by Steve Goodman and also recorded by Suzy Bogguss, Celtic Thunder, Liam Clancy, Norm Hacking, Anne Hills, Mara Levine and Si Khan, John McDermott, the New Kingston Trio, Gamble Rogers, Tom Russell, Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert James Waller, Josh White Jr. and Bernard Wrigley." I think this is an absolute classic song and it is one of my absolute all-time fave songs. My fave version is by Steve Goodman :-) Two versions follow.....one from Steve's 1972 album "Somebody Else's Troubles" and a live version (possibly from 'Austin City Limits') with Jethro Burns on mandolin. "Desperado"

I feel like I am in heaven 'cos I have come across a version of "Desperado" by Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles :-) "Desperado" was written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. One of my absolute all-time fave songs. A pretty desperate and tenuous link follows :-) According to Thesaurus, 'Desperado' can mean 'Outlaw'. I think the guy in this shot, taken in Amsterdam way back in 2004, looks a bit like an 'Outlaw'. Job done methinks :-) Added to ~ Sight and Sound ♫ ♪ ♪ ♫ Listen here ~ Desperado ~ Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles And, a couple of other versions so that I don't lose track of them - Carpenters' version Jill Johnson's version I do like Jill's outfit :-)

"Hotel California"

Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 The building on the left is not really Hotel California. But, it is for the purposes of Soundtrack Weekend :-))) I wish I didn’t have to look through so much foul language when reading YouTube comments but that is a gripe for another day!!!! Anyway, one comment includes the line “The ending of this song is simply one of the greatest sequences in rock history”. I would totally agree!! The interplay between Don Felder and Joe Walsh is breathtaking!! Add to this the most perfect vocal performance by Don Henley. “You can check out any time you like/But you can never leave" Listen/Watch here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dyw6LZpSOA p.s. it is actually ‘swissotel’ on the left of my shot :-) We stayed in 'Hotel Amsterdam' (in the middle of the shot) back in 2004.

I need a shot of a Hotel for “Soundtrack Weekend” and that has probably given the game away!! Looking thru’ some very old shots I think I may have found a suitable one and whilst looking I came across this shot where, clearly, I was trying to be a bit arty :-) This comes from the time Helen & I went to Amsterdam for one of our Wedding Anniversaries. That was back in 2004. I really don’t know why we haven’t returned to Amsterdam ‘cos I thought it was the most amazing and beautiful place :-) Anyway, this also comes from a time when I would rarely make a note of what I did in Photoshop! But, I do believe this could have been a Painterly effect combined with a dash of the Buzz.Simplifier filter. I am sure you wanted to know that :-)))
