Breathtaking Ruby Macaw Hybrid

26 Sep 2012 1 528
This is such a beautiful bird, it always amazes me the stunning colors that birds can display! This macaw is actually a hybrid between two species which look similar at first glance, but are quite different with a good look. Both the Scarlet Macaw and the Greenwing Macaw are predominately red, but the Scarlet has red, yellow and blue with a touch of green on its wings, whereas the Greenwing has red, blue and green on its wings. Breeding them together results in a Ruby Macaw, which has some characteristics from both types of macaw and a touch of its own differences too. A single clutch of chicks from a hybrid mix can all turn out slightly differently, just as you would find if you bred two breeds of dogs or cats together. Hybrids are severely frowned upon in aviculture because both most acaws are endangered in the wild, and it is considered to be very irresponsible to create these bird blends when keeping the bloodlines pure is so important. When Steve and I went to Chris Biro's "Pirate's Parrot Show" at the Jackson County Fair, he educated the public about hybrids and why they are not a good thing in the bird world. Nevertheless, this bird is very beautiful, and now it has the chance to help teach people more about parrots and conservation. I hope to finish my current work project in the next couple of days and will be back to visiting everyone's pages again as usual! I've missed you all and all of your fabulous photography!

Ruby Macaw Hybrid

What happens when you take a Scarlet Macaw and you breed it to a Greenwing Macaw ? You get a hybrid called a Ruby Macaw, and it has some characteristics from both types of macaw, with a touch of its own differences as well: both parent birds are a bright red, but this bird has a less brilliant color which changes to orange-red around its neck. Just like mixing two breeds of dogs or cats together, the offspring from a hybrid mix can all turn out slightly different within the same clutch of chieks. O Hai! Behold the Catalina Macaw Hybrid

A few days ago I posted a picture of a Ruby Macaw hybrid , which is a cross between a Scarlet and Greenwing Macaw. The Catalina Macaw is a cross between a Scarlet and a Blue & Gold Macaw, and is actually a cross that occurs sometimes in the wild. Male Scarlet Macaws will occasionally breed with Blue & Gold females because Scarlet females are less common. This macaw was one of the featured birds at Chris Biro's Pirate's Parrot Show, which Steve and I got to see at the Jackson County Fair in July. Unlike many bird shows that are all about cute tricks and promoting parrots as pets, Chris educates the audience about parrots and conservation in a fun and interactive format! The Breathtaking Catalina Macaw Hybrid!

A few days ago I posted a fun portrait of this bird, and here is another picture to feast your eyes on! What a beauty! I am fascinated by animal husbandry, so seeing the hybrids featured at Chris Biro's Pirate's Parrot Show was fascinating to me. I was so surprised to find out that this hybrid ( Scarlet x Blue & Gold ) can occur in the wild, since the parent birds are so different in coloration! However, when mates of the same species are not available, this cross-breeding sometimes happens. I founf a fascinating website that discusses the known captive and wild hybrid crosses with pictures and a lot of information.
