Yellow & lavender lupine

Different-colored blossoms on the same plant, which suggests the yellow is a color variant. Lupinus spp., probably L. arbustus , which occurs widely in the mountain West and has blossoms ranging from white to bluish. Blue Mass Scenic Area in extreme eastern Nevada.

Lupinus spp. I don't know if this is a separate species from the usual one around here or just a color variant. The inset shows an individual with both yellow and the more usual bluish-lavender blossoms. Blue Mass Scenic Area in extreme eastern Nevada. Edit: On further research, it seems to be L. arbustus , which has a range of flower colors and which occurs widely in the mountain West.

But it's September!

Lupine and some un-ID'd yellow flower blooming around 8500 ft, in the upper basin of the Squaw Valley ski resort. I assume they'd been covered with snow till just recently. As it is, the snow is likely to return in a month or so!

Probably longspur lupine, Lupinus arbustus , off the Pacific Crest Trail north of the Sierra Buttes, California. It is probably _not_ yellow bush lupine because of this alpine location--not to mention the shrub is much smaller. It's a bit incongruous, nonetheless, when you're expecting lupines to have blue flowers!

Lupinus spp., probably Lupinus nevadensis . In Washoe Lake State Park, a couple of miles from my house. Lupine is toxic to livestock, due to its alkaloid content, and rangeland degradation can occur as the lupine takes over due to overgrazing. Per Wikipedia, anyway, lupine species have been used as food in both the Old and New Worlds, but the seeds have to be soaked to remove the alkaloids.
