Beaver Dam

On Marysville Creek, Toiyabe Range, Nevada. Beaver have made a big comeback in the mountain West since being hunted nearly to extinction in the early 19th century. The inset is a close-up of the materials in another dam, where the gnawed-off ends of the sticks and small logs are evident.

Upstream from Lake Tahoe, near the Hawley Grade lower trailhead. These flat meadows are probably silted-in beaver ponds. There are active beaver dams here (see adjacent photo), and lots of old ones are also visible. Sierra Nevada, California, USA.

Aspen gnawed off by a beaver. Burt Canyon, Sierra Nevada, California, USA. In the headwaters of the Little Walker River. This was off a mountain bike trip into the canyon up to the edge of the wilderness area, where bikes aren't allowed. As I've mentioned elsewhere, the beaver have made a big comeback since being hunted nearly to extinction by the early 19th century.

Beaver pond in Lundy Canyon

Above Lundy Lake before the trailhead. Sierra Nevada, California, USA. The tree stumps in the water are trees that were drowned by the pond. Beaver, almost hunted to extinction during the fur trade up into the early 19th century, have made a big comeback throughout western North America, to the point that they're now a nuisance for high-end homeowners out in the exurbs!
