Gasworks Park

A Seattle city park; telephoto view looking north across Lake Union. It was (yes) a gas works, making flammable gas by the reaction of steam and coal, the so-called "water gas" reaction. Since the gas contains carbon monoxide, it's quite toxic! It's how Victorian heroines could kill themselves by turning on the gas. Its replacement by natural gas, which is mostly methane, was a considerable safety improvement. Such CO-H2 mixtures ("synthesis gas", affectionately "syngas") are still of great importance in chemical synthesis, however. The site even has a Wikipedia write-up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_Works_Park The map location is of the park itself rather than that of the camera.

Lake Union

Seattle, Washington, USA. Looking north from the south shore by the old US Naval Reserve building, now the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI). Lake Union is natural, but was connected to Lake Washington (off the pic to the right) and Puget Sound (off to the left) in the early 20th century by the Ship Canal.
