Gasworks Park

Gasworks Park
A Seattle city park; telephoto view looking north across Lake Union. It was (yes) a gas works, making flammable gas by the reaction of steam and coal, the so-called "water gas" reaction. Since the gas contains carbon monoxide, it's quite toxic! It's how Victorian heroines could kill themselves by turning on the gas. Its replacement by natural gas, which is mostly methane, was a considerable safety improvement. Such CO-H2 mixtures ("synthesis gas", affectionately "syngas") are still of great importance in chemical synthesis, however. The site even has a Wikipedia write-up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_Works_Park
The map location is of the park itself rather than that of the camera.

Don Barrett (aka DBs travels), Clint, Smiley Derleth, and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo
