My grandfather in WW1. He was a Conscientious Objector but served on the ambulance crew at Gallipoli and also in Egypt with the Red Cross. He rarely ever talked about his war experiences to his family. He lost two brothers in the war, within weeks of each other.
This has been an absolutely amazing few weeks for me for family connections. (4/10) This wonderful portrait was sent to me from a relative in England who found me through a photograph in my Gregory Set.

Not only have I never seen this photo of my Grandad before but my mother has never seen it (she never saw any picture of him from the War.)
Alix - my fourth cousin - kindly sent me others,(equally amazing) - that I will post shortly.
This in addition to connecting with close (unknown) relatives on my Dad's side - with previously unseen photos - and finding out info about my husband's family.

Arthur was engaged to marry Anna Nolan but died in 1918 in the War in France. Ten years later Anna married his oldest brother William who had been left a widower with three children when his wife died from asthma-induced pnuemonia. His youngest child - my mother - was four when they married and Anna became my dearly loved Nana.
Some new information from his granddaughter Laura confirming Arthur as a 16th Lancer. Both he and his young brother George (I will post his picture soon) were killed within a month of each other. The following is the card sent to their parents:
Gone from us but not forgotten
Never shall their memory fade
Fell while fighting for their country
Now they lie in soldiers graves.
In loving memory of
Sergeant Arthur Thomas Gregory
No 246910, 123rd Batt. R.F.A.
Late 16th Lancers
Who died of wounds in France
May 1st 1918
Although it includes George's information I'll include that when I post his picture.
May 1st was Anna Nolan's (Arthur's fiancee's) birthday.
Arthur was my great - uncle.
