Compliments of Minnie De Lange

12 Sep 2010 221
Found in the Mary Halkard, Sarah Grimshaw photo album of my husband's great-grandmother. The photo has been trimmed a little and thumbtacked at some point. She looks like an actress or maybe an opera singer. There is an A.J. Van Blarcom mentioned in a New Jersey clipping so I'll assume that Dorticus had his studio in that state. Just found out a little more. Apparently Clatonia Joaquin Dorticus was a Cuban born inventor who had a patent on (among other things) an improved photo printer. He ran the town photography studio in Newton, New Jersey. He moved to NYC in 1900. This looks 1880ish to me. Written on the back: PEOPLE'S PHOTO STUDIO over A.J.
