The Watsons of Newport, Rhode Island

27 Sep 2023 10 4 240
Posted, and not too long ago, (sorry) to my Vintage Miserable Family Group but I'm re-posting to the Vintage Photos Theme Park for the current theme of POLICE OFFICERS, as I apparently have no other examples. I bought this photograph from a woman antique dealer who had grown up in Newport, Rhode Island and knew of this family. She told me that the boy to the left of the mother had the interesting name of "Pardon" Watson. The father was a police officer and we can see him here wearing his badge. It was also a good fit for the "Vintage Miserable Family group" (but spot the lone smiler.) This was cropped to enlarge the details. Below is the original mounted on cardboard.

Hellyers and Earps at Stamford Hill, London, c. 19…

12 Dec 2008 301
Photo sent out to Australia and then to me from my 2nd cousin Erin Earp. From L to R: Edwin Earp - son of Maud - (known as Sonny and later as Charles - he emigrated to Australia) unknown woman labeled Bessie, Maud (Hellyer) Earp my grandmother's oldest sister, the woman sitting in the middle is (I believe) incorrectly labeled in the original as Mrs Earp but I think it is Mrs. Hellyer - Jane (Davey by her first husband) Hellyer nee Major, (so originally Jane Major) my Great grandmother and Maud's mother. The little girl in front is Maud's oldest daughter Edna, the young men in the boater hat is Maud's half brother Edwin David Hellyer and the woman to the far right is Kate Louise Hellyer, Maud's sister. Taken in Stamford Hill, London about 1910.

English All-of-a-Kind Family

One of my favorite found pictures. I got this in a second hand shop in Highams Park, London in 1974. Brought forward (late) for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "favorite photos." Even though this is an English family (I assume) it always reminded me of the American Jewish family from the Lower East Side in the children's book All-of -a -Kind Family by Sydney Taylor - a book I loved as a kid.
