I hope to start posting regularly again in a few weeks. I've missed being here - and the time to post!
My mother's school trip. She is at the ten o' clock position on the left, holding her curled up leg.
My grandfather almost didn't let her go. He said the price was ridiculous. (I think it was 7 pounds for ten days at a hostel including train fare.) It wasn't that he couldn't afford it - he just dug his heels in. My mother's older sister shamed him by announcing that she would pay for it if he didn't, so he relented.
My mother is eleven almost twelve, though she looks older in all of the photos here.
These are all Leyton (London) girls.
My mom added a note on the back:
Remembering 29 years later from left to right.
(I've put the names she listed in "Tags.")
Wedding of Jill Doe and Stephen McNair

July 7, 1945.
Jill, my mother's best friend, was a war bride who married a man from Louisiana and emigrated to the States. They lived near New Orleans.
L to R:
Jill's half sister Phyllis was maid of honor, Mac's friend was best man, Jill Doe soon to be Jill McNair, Stephen McNair called Mac and Jill's cousin, Joyce, was the bridesmaid.
Poor Joyce had to wear a dress that was far too short and small altogether (Jill wrote to my mother) but it was the war and it was all she could get.
My mother was not able ot attend as she was still in the WRENS.
My Mother at Thornton Heath, 1945.

Brought forward for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: A FAVORITE VINTAGE PORTRAIT, FORMAL OR INFORMAL
On the right: My mother, Hazel Gregory (later Lundbech), and on the left: Her best friend Jill Doe, (later McNair) home on leave from the WRENS. Taken at Jill's house in Thornton Heath, outside of London.
They both later emigrated to the States - my mother to Connecticut, and Jill to New Orleans.
I treasure this photo and have it framed.
I love the bond this shows, their youth, and their sweetness. They were 21.
Jill passed away several years ago. My mom is a healthy 97 and lives with us in Vermont.
