In front a statue of Jacobus van 't Hoff, who won the first Nobel prize for Chemistry. The statue dates from 1915, the school (Hogere Burgerschool means Higher Citizen School, a level just under the Gymnasium / Grammar School) dates from 1906. It was a school until 1957. The statue was also meant to inspire the school-going youth.

The Hoogere Burgerschool (HBS) was one level below the Gymnasium (Grammar School), which was the highest level. The HBS also had a more modern curriculum compared to the Gymnasium, so it was preferred for those pursuing technical and economic educations. The educational system in the Netherlands was changed in the 1960s, so there is no HBS anymore.
