Entrance to the former Hoogere Burgerschool in Haarlem
The Hoogere Burgerschool (HBS) was one level below the Gymnasium (Grammar School), which was the highest level. The HBS also had a more modern curriculum compared to the Gymnasium, so it was preferred for those pursuing technical and economic educations.
The educational system in the Netherlands was changed in the 1960s, so there is no HBS anymore.

In Britain a school which teaches Latin and Greek and prepares for university is called a grammar school, but in most European countries on the continent it is called Gymnasium.
