Stalwarts of Scottish motive power at the time, Class 26 locomotive 26014 and Class 20171. Taken in the days when depots were many, usually had locomotives and when a courteous request to look round was usually met with a courteous and affirmative reply. Ayr Depot is a little to the south of Newton-on-Ayr station.
