Contactless Card CV19 - 29 May 2020

This sign reflects one of the most significant social developments during the coronavirus pandemic. Early in the crisis, it was agreed to increase the contactless payment limit from £30 to £45 and, to everyones credit, this was introduced quickly and smoothly. The move came as retailers and other outlets expressed a preference for card payments over cash as part of the attempts to reduce disease transmission. Concerns have been voiced that this development might hasten too greatly the progress towards a cashless society. I agree that, pandemic notwithstanding, we are some way away from being able to operate a wholly cashless society.
On this sign in particular, I would point out that it is meant to be helpful and informative but its wording is clumsy and ambiguous. It should emphasise more clearly that the contactless limit is now £45. Some people, especially those who still prefer cash, could be confused by the wording.

Kimpton Close Thanks the NHS (1) - 18 April 2020

Where adults sometimes see clouds, children see rainbows. Throughout the darkness of the coronavirus crisis, drawings of rainbows appeared everywhere, often accompanied by a message of thanks for the NHS. Those in windows were a little difficult to photograph but this striking example, in Kimpton Close, Lee on Solent, was seen in favourable light. This is the view from Twyford Drive.
Current photographs are taken during exercise or essential shopping trips.

Hope - 18 April 2020

The quiet Common Barn Lane in Lee on Solent is the location for much of my photography during the seemingly interminable coronavirus crisis as it is on my preferred route for exercise. I have derived much pleasure from the now fading catkins and the cones which I have never before noticed in such numbers. On today's walk, I saw that somebody had put the cones to good use. We all need hope.

Throughout the darkness of the coronavirus crisis, drawings of rainbows appeared everywhere, often accompanied by a message of thanks for the NHS. Those in windows were a little difficult to photograph but this striking example, in Gosport Road, Stubbington, had, fortuitously, been created during a period of protracted dry weather.

It's No Picnic - 12 April 2020

After a substantial period of self-isolation unrelated to coronavirus, Cam M Bear (right), a friend not previously seen on this site, has re-emerged at this time of need as a self-styled motivational speaker. Here he explains that getting to the end of the crisis isn't going to be a walk in the park (except, possibly, once a day) and, for teddy bears in particular, certainly no picnic either.
Cam is also planning a series of get-tough interviews with MPs entitled Bear Grills Your Representative.

Early in April 2020 as coronavirus restrictions gripped the UK and at about the time the Prime Minister himself was admitted to hospital, households received a letter and pamphlet from 10 Downing Street reinforcing the government's message. With no sign of an opportunity to ease restrictions and warm weather already in place, the long Easter weekend would, it seemed, be a trying time.
2020 was turning out to be a year like no other in my lifetime.

2020 Defined (1) - 27 March 2020
27 Mar 2020 |

I hope this will be being read when the coronavirus crisis is no more than a disturbing and sobering memory. In March 2020, a year which had unfolded in a way no-one could have foreseen, social distancing methods were part of the response to a pandemic of near unprecedented gravity. A walk to the store combined necessary exercise with the minimum of necessary shopping. Notices like this were everywhere at businesses which were allowed to remain open. In those businesses, the staff performed wonders in stressful circumstances. Those at my local Co-op were no exception.

Route 21 - 25 March 2020

When I created my album 'Vision 2020' , I was thinking of such things as Brexit, the demise of the old £20 note and the introduction of the new note. I did not imagine that the year would develop as it has. Who did? The good weather of 25 March could be enjoyed only on a shopping trip but provided good light on a bus shelter on Newgate Lane East, Fareham with its topical poster. First's route 21 stops here; in the meantime we can't wait for '21 to start.

It is still early in the year but I doubt if any one word will more sharply define 2020 than coronavirus, now worldwide and the subject of varying degrees of reaction and, it has to be said, overreaction.
A calm, factual approach is shown on this Government/NHS poster at a City Road bus stop near the Old Street roundabout in London.
