Blackfriars Station [1864] (3) - 8 February 2015

The Blackfriars Station of the South Eastern Railway had been conceived by the Charing Cross Railway Company, which explains the inscription, but opened in 1864 after a takeover by the former. It closed as soon as 1868 when SER Waterloo Station (now Waterloo East) opened a little to the west. It has been known at various times as Blackfriars Road to avoid confusion with the later Blackfriars station(s). The bridge and entrance were restored in 2005. Unfortunately (in my opinion) a cafe has been opened in the entrance and a bus stop partially obstructs the view but the whole thing is still a delight.

This informative plaque is at the site of the short-lived 19th century Blackfriars Station on Blackfriars Road. This picture introduces the next two in my photostream which show the station entrance, restored in 2005.
