Lest We Forget (2) - 13 September 2019

A soldier figure installed, I presume, in 2018 during the commemorations of the centenary of the end of the First World War, stands with the War Memorial on the village green in Stubbington, Hampshire.

The Stubbington War Memorial dates from 1922 and is a wooden structure over the village pump. The soldier figure was, I presume, installed in 2018 during the commemorations of the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Signs of Development (2) - 22 April 2018

Towards the end of the project to construct Newgate Lane East (as it is now known), signs along the route were rather clumsily altered by the attachment of vinyl stickers. I am not sure that anyone cares where the funding came from and I am puzzled by the use of the highly generic 'HM Government'. Why does this not refer to a specific department of state?

Westbury Manor Museum - 3 September 2017

Westbury Manor Museum, 84 West Street, Fareham.
Westbury Manor Museum is run by the Hampshire Cultural Trust and re-opened in 2017 after a refurbishment which, externally, saw the removal of a wall and small car park which were replaced by a pleasing open-plan frontage with attractive plantings.
The museum opened in 1990 after a period of dereliction and was transferred to the Hampshire Cultural Trust in 2014. The Grade II listed building in its current form dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. From 1934 to 1976 it was used as the offices of Fareham Urban District Council although this period is also reported as 1932 to 1974.

The inscription on the inlaid stone which can be seen upper right reads 'Erected by Revd. R. Harvey and Mrs Seymour 1891'.

Newgate Lane Realignment (1) - 28 August 2017
30 Aug 2017 |
|
The long awaited work to realign the southern section of Newgate Lane (B3385) in Fareham began in summer 2017 although progress was, at first, difficult to see. The existing road between Peel Common roundabout and HMS Collingwood/Speedfields Park is relatively narrow and somewhat windy and the speed limit of 40mph seems excessive given the conditions and the number of large vehicles using the route.
The new alignment runs adjacent to the Brookers Field playing fields and it would appear that these are to be separated from the road by a substantial fence.
I shall not be able to follow the minute details of this project but I am curious to see what happens at the Peel Common roundabout which has already been substantially remodelled with the addition of traffic lights. The new alignment looks as though it would join this relatively recent layout rather clumsily perhaps necessitating a further remodelling.
