A Street View in Jaffa (2) - 16 May 2014

04 Jun 2014 1 121
At the risk of losing some dignity or credibility, I shall accompany this photograph with a brief tale. On my first visit to Jaffa, I was looking for the old station, which is not well signposted. I hope I am not the only one who might imagine this attractive building as a former railway station (allowing for changed surroundings). Anyway this is not that station but houses some small shop units. It stands between Sderot Yerushalayim [Jerusalem Boulevard] and the narrow Bat Ami (right). 200_P1020907

The New Saraya and Clock Tower (2) - 16 May 2014

02 Jun 2014 109
The Clock Tower is probably the most famous feature of the centre of Jaffa but I was also rather taken by 'The New Saraya' seen on the left of this picture. Saraya House was the residence of the Turkish governor and the Turkish government building. It was largely destroyed in a Lehi bombing in 1948. Subsequent restoration included the pillars of the government building. 200_P1020897

Sebil - 23 May 2014

This is the 'sebil' (public water fountain) of the Mahmudiyeh Mosque in Jaffa. With its white granite, pink marble and beautiful inscriptions, this struck me as a beautiful piece of architecture. 200_P1030357

Swimming Prohibited - 16 May 2014

27 May 2014 113
There are many of these signs along the shore from Tel Aviv to Jaffa. They are treated pretty much like the local parking restrictions....so expect to see people swimming. 200_P1020866

View of Old Jaffa (2) - 16 May 2014

27 May 2014 106
Jaffa pre-dates Tel Aviv, with which it is now linked, by many hundreds of years. It is, at first, a little confusing and becomes charming with acquaintance. Prominent on the skyline is the bell tower of St. Peter's Church whilst in the foreground is the al-Bahr Mosque (Sea Mosque). 200_P1020863

A Bridge to Jaffa - 16 May 2014

The title of this photograph is something of a convenience as it actually looks from Jaffa to Tel Aviv across a little creek. 200_P1020860

The Etzel House (2) - 16 May 2014

The Etzel House Museum at Jaffa is a small museum to the history of the Etzel (more formally Irgun). The organisation fought the British in 1931-48. 200_P1020854

Jaffa Clock Tower - 16 May 2014

23 May 2014 109
Perhaps the most familiar landmark in Old Jaffa is the clock tower in Yefet/Rehov David Razi'el. This is one of seven clock towers built in Israel during the Ottoman period. The others are located in Safed, Acre, Nazareth, Haifa, Nablus (West Bank) and Jerusalem, the last being the only one that has not survived until today. (Wikipedia) 200_P1020874

Jaffa Railway Station (6) - 21 May 2014

21 May 2014 139
Jaffa Railway Station was constructed in 1892 as the terminus of the Jaffa-Jerusalem Railway. Adjacent buildings included the commercial terminal, the Wieland house and factory. A number of buildings including the station now form 'Ha Tachana' (simply, 'The Station') which is a popular eating and shopping location in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. This coach is displayed in front of the station building. 200_P1030238
