Crystal Serenity leaves Auckland for Tauranga after a two night stay. 200_2_P1030257C

In this composition you can see the cruise ship Crystal Serenity, three of her lifeboats and the two Ports of Auckland tugs 'Waipapa' (left) and 'Waka Kume'. What you can not see (or even deduce from the little splash behind 'Waipapa') is the delightful scene which had just unfolded before my eyes. The tugs, having completed their duties with Serenity, headed towards each other, both performed an exuberant pirouette before the maritime equivalent of a fist-bump, shown here, then headed rather more sedately back to their berths. 200_2_P1030246C

In a composition I hope many will find pleasing, the Wallenius Wilhelmsen vehicle carrier 'Tønsberg' leaves Auckland behind Crystal Serenity which was under way to Tauranga after a two night stay. 200_2_P1030263C

This rather splendid view of Station Pier, Melbourne shows the contrasting styles of the ferry 'Spirit of Tasmania II' which would sail at 1930 for Devonport and the cruise ship Crystal Serenity which had arrived from Sydney and would overnight before departing for Adelaide as she continued her round the world cruise from and to Miami. I get both amusement and pleasure from the symmetries and intersections created by my travels. I had seen Crystal Serenity earlier in my own vacation in Auckland. We had gone our separate ways with Serenity leaving the New Zealand port three days before Oosterdam and been reunited in Victoria. Two very different markets are served by the two ships seen at Queens Wharf, Auckland with The Cloud between them. Crystal Serenity was on a Miami - Miami round the world trip and had arrived from Raratonga and Bay of Islands. She would depart for Tauranga. My series 'When Worlds Collide' continues with this image of Crystal Serenity at Auckland. For me, the greatest cruise ship ports are those which are right in the town or city making excursions on foot easy and exciting. The series shows cruise ships in such settings and as an imposing presence on their surroundings. This is the view from the city's busy Queen Street.
