The Spiders From Hull - 28 October 2021

03 Nov 2021 1 67
When we remember David Bowie, as we always shall, we remember too the excellent musicians with whom he performed including, of course, those in the Spiders from Mars. Two of those noted on this plaque at Hull Paragon station have passed away. 200_4_P1030687SCE

Alexandra Palace (9) - 21 May 2019

31 May 2019 79
I guess the definition of high definition was just a bit different in 1936. Nevertheless, this picture of a plaque at Alexandra Palace is an important part of the record of a very enjoyable visit. The building is of great architectural merit and the site, of course, of considerable historical significance. TZ30_P1050788CE

Soberton Pumping Station (1) - 19 April 2019

20 Apr 2019 140
On the A32 Wickham Road at Mislingford between Wickham and Droxford, stands an absolutely magnificent building, the former Soberton Pumping Station of the erstwhile Gosport Water Works Company. The building is now occupied by Pump House Auctions. Other buildings on the site are still in use by Portsmouth Water. The plaque, impressive in its own right, records a formal inauguration date of 24 April 1907. Other records note that it started delivering water on 24 May 1907. Mislingford is a name on a map and the pumping station is also associated with the nearby Soberton and Swanmore. Those with a knowledge of Hampshire geography might well be puzzled by the location in relation to the Gosport of the company's name. The records show that the pumping station did indeed deliver water over a distance of some 11 miles to the coastal town which was, at the turn of the century, still developing its water supply. 5300_DSC_0073R

23 Heddon Street - 12 April 2018

12 Apr 2018 65
23 Heddon Street, London, W1 is noted as the location of the cover photograph for David Bowie's 1972 album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars'. A plaque was erected there in 2012, forty years after the release of the album and four years before Bowie's untimely death. A lot happens in more than forty years and my subdued pilgrimage today brought me to a spot all but unrecognisable from its 1970s appearance but well documented on the internet. 200_3_P1050332R

Ziggy Stardust - 12 April 2018

This plaque at 23 Heddon Street, London, W1 was unveiled in 2012, forty years after the release of 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spider from Mars' and four years before the untimely death of David Bowie. Plaques commemorating fictional characters are rare. Sherlock Holmes is commemorated in Baker Street and Lara Croft in Derby. 200_3_P1050330CE

South Gate, Exeter - 2 February 2018

04 Feb 2018 134
A recent interest in the Planagenets and the Wars of the Roses made all the more interesting this plaque in Exeter on the present day South Street at the junction of Little Southernhay Lane. The South Gate itself was demolished as long ago as 1819. 200_3_P1040242R

The Waiting Miner (2) - 21 June 2016

22 Jun 2016 126
Plaque attached to the plinth of 'The Waiting Miner' (1966) by H Phillips, bronze on concrete base. I found the statue, now at the entrance to Betteshanger Country Park, very moving. When one recalls the decline of the mining industry, most think, I imagine, of Wales, the north of England and Scotland but there was an important coalfield with five collieries in Kent also. Betteshanger was one of the five. The statue has a long and sometimes controversial history of being moved around Kent and this plaque was attached only in its more recent history. I commend to you the following two articles amongst others: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-14354786 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betteshanger_Country_Park 200_2_P1110105

India Arms - 28 December 2014

28 Dec 2014 138
High Street, Gosport is a scene of some desolation these days with retail space hard to let as documented periodically in my photostream. A glimpse of a more vibrant past can be seen towards the east end of High Street in the form of this plaque marking the site of the former India Arms Inn. The area was once densely populated and served by numerous inns and taverns (at least 61 according to one source). 200_2_P1020158

Campbell House Plaque - 22 October 2014

27 Oct 2014 156
Campbell House is a beautiful building and the oldest remaining from the original Town of York (the predecessor of Toronto). Standing at Queen and University, it was relocated from Adelaide Street to this site in 1972. This plaque, facing University Street, explains a little about the house's owner, Sir William Campbell. 200_2_P1010039

Structures of Modern Heathrow (5) - 21 July 2014

21 Jul 2014 118
To remember Heathrow's Europa Building, later the original Terminal 2, is to remember with fondness a different era. The Terminal 2 of the 21st century is necessary for many reasons but it was nice to see this plaque in a prominent position on the new building. 200_P1040868SC
