Saturday 27 August 1988 was the first day of a two day rail exhibition at London Bridge organised by Network South East. My notes from the time indicate that this was very well attended and, as far as I know, this is the only picture I have from the event. Class 203 (4L) unit 203001 had been formed from 1011 which had been a Class 202 (6L) Hastings Line unit. The designation Class 203 had previously been used for the shorter 5L units. 881304_270888E

In these days of modern but largely characterless multiple units, I retain an affection for Class 455 which echoes faintly a lost era. Southern Class 455/8 455828 is seen approaching platform 15 at the much changed London Bridge. It will form the 1055 to Beckenham Junction. 200_3_P1050269CE

The extent to which The Shard dominates the skyline of south east London is evident in this shot, taken from the Viewing Level (10th floor) of Switch House, Tate Modern. The once dominant Guy's Tower seems much diminished even after external refurbishment in the relatively recent past. On a dull day, the many towers of Docklands seem also of less significance. Giving a voice to the past, Southwark Cathedral can be seen centre left and, to the left of the distinctive No. 1 London Bridge, HMS Belfast. Some way in front of The Shard is an inevitable crane and another can be seen behind the adjacent News Building. The skyline in the view north and north east from this vantage point, already scarred by the incoherence of recent additions, is horribly blighted by cranes almost too numerous to count. 200_2_P1150501E

The second is of Southeastern Class 465/2 Networker 465245 at a signal check for what is now platform 9 before proceeding to Charing Cross. There was Hi-vis as far as the eye could see as intensive work took place on the approaches to platforms 8-15 of London Bridge during a blockade which was scheduled from 20 December 2014 - 4 January 2015. The Thameslink Programme is changing London Bridge for ever and is so large that disruptions to services will continue until 2018. 200_2_P1020217

The blockade of 20 December 2014 - 4 January 2015 contributed to rendering unrecognisable London Bridge station as part of the continuing programme of sweeping changes to improve north-south travel through London and improve capacity in the area. Seen from platform 4, the area viewed here is/was platforms 8-15 but these will eventually be renumbered. 200_2_P1020221

The journey to the future is a long and often hard one for rail passengers and nowhere more so than at London Bridge where disruption in the name of development will continue for at least three more years. This warning notice at the already much-altered station gives a pretty good flavour of things to come. 200_2_P1020223
