A Hero for the Modern Age - 21 June 2014

I like juxtaposition as a compositional device. An evening walk in Hyde Park had already offered pleasing evening light falling on the statue of Achilles. With a couple of paces west, the view suggested the statue as a frame for the tower of the London Hilton Park Lane.

The 7/7 Memorial is located in the south east corner of Hyde Park. The memorial comprises 52 stainless steel pillars (stelae), collectively representing each of the 52 victims, grouped together in four inter-linking clusters reflecting the four locations of the incidents. Part of the Kings Cross cluster is shown here. Each of the stelae measures 3.5 metres in height and is unique, with individual characteristic finishes brought about by the casting process.

In The Rose Garden (2) - 20 June 2014

London's parks help the city breathe. Hyde Park, beautiful in itself, contains the very beautiful Rose Garden which is both fragrant and tranquil and yet only yards away from some of London's busiest roads.

Achilles - 21 June 2014

The evening sun falls on the statue of a mythological victor erected to commemorate the more recent victories of a very real 19th century national hero.
The statue of Achilles in London's Hyde Park was erected by command of King George IV to commemorate the victories by the Duke of Wellington at Salamanca, Vittoria, Toulouse and Waterloo.
