This statue of Queen Victoria, rather beautifully lit early on a Tuesday morning, is on College Green, Bristol standing in front of the Marriott Hotel. TZ70_2_P1000008E

2020 was a year like no other in the life of the Port of Southampton and this picture reflects some of what that year meant as viewed from Mayflower Park. It is unusual to see a Cunard ship on 101 but that's where Queen Victoria was today, taking a break from other south coast resting places. Alongside were the bunker vessel Whitonia and the Veolia waste disposal vessel Seagreen, both well known to habitués of the port. My pictures usually show one or the other with a cruise ship but rarely both. In the background is P&O Arcadia on 106, also taking a break from short distance cruising between Hampshire and Dorset. A part of the background, starboard of Queen Victoria might go unremarked in photographs up until now but the slightly majestic Solent Mills is now undergoing demolition to be replaced by who knows what. There are, apparently, good reasons to demolish rather than preserve the building but it is sad to see it thus reduced. 5300_DSC_2160E

This picture is part of a new series depicting Port Everglades, the busy port of Fort Lauderdale. As is usual with ports these days, access is not easy and viewpoints are limited. My pictures, then, are by no means all portraits, as I would prefer, but a record of the port at work. On berth 18, RCCL Serenade of the Seas was preparing for departure to Freeport, Grand Bahama. Dwarfed by the two cruise ships on berth 06 is the general cargo ship 'Oslo Bulk 9'. The jib was raised later but the lighting would not have been ideal. Serenade of the Seas had arrived from Oranjestad and would depart for Freeport, Grand Bahama. 200_3_P1040961R

January is not the busiest month for cruise ships at Southampton and the weather which greeted the start of 2016 had, to say the least, been unsettled. Nevertheless, there were breaks in today's stormy rain and I arrived at the port at a good time for a visit planned to see three ships. Cunard's Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth had both arrived from Hamburg and were preparing for long cruises with first ports of call of Ponta Delgada and Madeira respectively. The rather smaller Saga Sapphire, seen here on berth 102, had arrived from Ponta Delgada and would depart for Madeira.
