Unity Mine, Cwmgwrach (3) - 27 August 2015

More than most, I am a pragmatist, accepting the realities of the modern world for what they are but never, I hope, underestimating the human impact of such things as the painful death of the UK mining industry. I was at Cwmgwrach to view the present day end of the once more extensive Vale of Neath line. The tracks in the second three of six photographs from today are visited by only occasional trains as the Unity Mine has, sadly, been in administration for nearly two years.
Simply to be there and to have a conversation with someone very engaging and with a long memory, brought home very hard the reality of lives changed forever in South Wales. It was a sobering and educational experience.
Photograph taken with permission.

Looking Beyond Cwmgwrach (3) - 27 August 2015
28 Aug 2015 |

It was sad but exciting to visit the railway tracks at Cwmgwrach, a place where the railway was curtailed a long time ago and mining more recently in spite of the valiant efforts of many. In these first three of six photographs from today, my views of the headshunt for what are now only very occasional trains look towards where the line once continued north east along the Vale of Neath and beyond.

New at Eastleigh - 8 August 2015

An interesting development at Eastleigh in the Summer of 2015 was the apparent preparations for the installation of new track around the virtual quarry.

Tracked Down (2) - 18 August 2014

This image qualifies only marginally for inclusion in my album 'Where Trains Once Ran' but makes an interesting abstract. This piece of railway track is embedded in the verge of Station Road, Coultershaw Bridge at the top of the access road to the former Petworth station, now The Old Railway Station Hotel.
