The title of this picture was chosen with care because, although the present system is known as the Budapest Metro, for which the modern symbol is seen to the left, the word 'Földalatti', dominant on the older sign, means 'Underground'. The station name is in a smaller font while the writing at the bottom reads simply 'to Mexikói út' (on Line M1). 200_3_P1070643E

I took this photograph with my good friend Swire in mind but, on closer examination, I found no evidence of a branch or office of Bank of China in this location, Oktogon, Budapest. The address given online is some considerable way away so I presume the sign is just an advertisement. The building featured, on the north side of Oktogon, has small commercial units at street level and appears to be residential above. 200_3_P1070636CE

Budapest Keleti station | Budapest Keleti pályaudvar Station architecture in the 19th century was undeniably grand but inside Budapest Keleti (1884), the image is somewhat tarnished. In fact, the site is a strange mixture of modernisation and neglect. In the foreground is the open space above a concourse accommodating the Metro station and some shops. This concourse level has steps up to the station platform level but, as far as I could see, no escalators. The station itself and a small circulating area around some poor eateries and the toilets are grubby and slightly crumbling. 200_3_P1070575CE
