BWR Panorama - 18 July 2020

21 Jul 2020 1 96
The Bodmin & Wenford Railway (BWR) is still, sadly, closed to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic but volunteers were at work and the view was still interesting. 47306 was preparing a move with two wagons (shown later in my photostream). The shunters are Sentinel P403D 'Denise' and Class 08 08444. 200_3_P1130104R

47771 at Eastleigh - 5 June 2020

06 Jun 2020 92
Following the demolition of the training school, some redevelopment has been going on on the Campbell Road side of the Eastleigh site. Some of the accessories make a nice frame for a rather weary looking 47771. Just visible to the right is a DMSO of former ScotRail emu 314204. 200_3_P1120766CE

Paddington Bared - 19 September 1986

23 Apr 2020 1 87
This slightly wonky picture, which might not make the cut in a non-lockdown era, captures a slice of life at another station which oozed character in the 80s but has since been crushed into lifeless conformity by development, This scene at Paddington is exactly the kind of thing a Southern Region escapee went there for. 47613 and Class 128 Driving Motor Luggage Van 55991 are seen in BR blue. The DMLV would later be painted in Post Office Red. 861418_190986E

47450 at East Croydon - 4 April 1986

21 Apr 2020 107
Class 47 has seen as many livery variations as any mainline locomotive this being in part, perhaps, to its longevity. Large logo 47450 was seen at East Croydon 34 years ago at the time of posting. The roof I take to be grey rather than silver as the grubby condition of the locomotive side does not reflect the level of care and pride associated with Stratford. In any case, I believe this locomotive was allocated to Crewe Diesel (CD) at the time of the photograph. 860615_040486E

Past Tense and Future Perfect - 5 January 2020

05 Jan 2020 1 95
On a cold, grey day which this picture does not capture, the future of the Mid-Hants Railway, closed seasonally in January, looked bright. The sidings at Ropley contained several of the railway's locomotives and other stock with Class 47 47579 'James Nightall GC' and Class 20 D8059 prominent. 200_3_P1120129C

On Shed at Ropley (2) - 15 October 2019

16 Oct 2019 2 70
An October Tuesday was a day of rest for the locomotives of the Mid Hants Railway but there was still plenty of interest in the cautious sunshine at Ropley. Shot across the light, this picture is, I think, quite atmospheric. In the foreground, 0-6-0PT No. 1 'Thomas' smokes prodigiously alongside Class 47 47579 'James Nightall GC'. Various locomotives in the background include 50027 'Lion'. 5300_DSC_1505E

47579 leaving Ropley - 6 July 2019

On my first visit in some while to the Mid Hants Railway, I was greeted on arrival by the sight and sound of Class 47 47579 'James Nightall GC' making a lively start from Ropley towards Alton. The silver-roofed locomotive, which has had a number of identities, is on loan from Mangapps Railway Museum and was operating on one of four Class 47 Running Days in addition to the steam service. 5300_DSC_0757C

Great Central Railway (57) - 6 December 2018

09 Dec 2018 124
More than four years after my last visit to the Great Central Railway, it was worth braving persistent rain to provide an updated document of the state of preservation at Loughborough Central. The hard work done there is evident and particularly so in the case of Class 47 1705 'Sparrowhawk', repainted since the 2014 visit . 200_3_P1080980

Boxing Day at Eastleigh (5) - 26 December 2016

26 Dec 2016 215
On Boxing Day 2016, Eastleigh was actually a little disappointing but a kind afternoon light enhanced the appearance of the locomotives there. DRS Class 47/8 47841 was in the Works area. 200_2_P1140649C

West Somerset Railway (8) - 6 June 2016

11 Jun 2016 141
For someone who was not brought up with steam by virtue of geography rather than my date of birth, diesel preservation is of great interest. The standard of preservation on the West Somerset Railway is very high and is exemplified here, at Williton, by Class 33 D6575, Class 47 D1661 'North Star', Western Class D1010 'Western Fusilier' and (right) Class 14 D9526. 200_2_P1100930

D1645 at Eastleigh (Mono) - 26 October 2015

26 Oct 2015 172
Class 47 D1645 (47830) at Eastleigh. It reportedly arrived on 23 October from Ilford. The BR two-tone green, seen to good effect in the previous picture, stirs some memories but I could not resist a b&w conversion, The surroundings in this picture have changed very much over the years and there are too many clues in this picture to make it truly timeless. 200_2_P1070362M

Another 47 Bagged (2) - 8 August 2015

09 Aug 2015 198
When an apparent obstacle can not easily be excluded from a picture, I sometimes find it worth including so, here, the rubble sacks help to depict the Eastleigh of today. Colas Rail Class 47 47739 'Robin of Templecombe 1938-2013' is named after Robin Gould, a former Westbury man, who worked for 55 years on the railways. 200_2_P1060231
