Flinders Street Station in Melbourne was completed in 1909 and would certainly feature on any list of the world's most striking railway architecture. It was the first railway station in an Australian city and the world's busiest passenger station in the late 1920s. Today's infrastructure, serving Metro trains, is rather more prosaic below street level than the spectacular building but there are charming features such as the clocks just visible here and featured in the next picture. 200_2_P1040069

"I'll meet you under the clocks" is a Melburnian idiom referring to the charming reminder of a more genteel age above the entrance to Melbourne's Flinders Street Station. These are just four of those lovely clocks, each set to the timetabled time of the next departure on some of the many lines served from the location. 200_2_P1040075
