The demolition of the former Southdown garage at Hilsea was a sad event but, as is often the case with such buildings today, it had been allowed to get into such a state that what might have been avoidable became inevitable. The flats now being constructed on the site by Mansell Homes and Portsmouth City Council look fairly attractive. When I saw them today for the first time in a while I thought that they were ate last nearing completion but, on closer inspection, there is still plenty of work to do. The rate of progress since my photograph of 31 March 2014 seems to have been very slow. 200_2_P1020612

The News Centre at Hilsea was vacated by the Portsmouth's The News in 2013. The announcement in April of that year was followed by the move to North Harbour in June. The Hilsea building, first occupied by The News in 1969, has some brutalist characteristics. 200_2_P1020616
