Around Leicester (17) - 14 July 2014

This is the kind of architectural gem which makes ones heart beat faster. Standing on the east side of extensive wasteland between All Saints Road and Jarvis Street and marking the now truncated Alexander Street is this delightful pumping station. I got the impression that much of Leicester's wasteland has long been in that condition and, although that is not unique to that city, it does spoil it. Development is often hindered by argument and economic changes and can mean the demise of buildings like this. However, I understand that this does not belong to the prospective developers but to the owners of the properties, under the railway arches in Jarvis Street. The pumping station is featured earlier in my photostream but this is, in fact, the first view I had as I explored the streets of Leicester. In the background is part of the viaduct of the former Great Central Railway. TZ30_P1020199

Pumping Station - 24 June 2014

This is another in my occasional series of observational shots recording what might appear to be a very mundane subject. This wastewater pumping station is at the junction of Barncroft Way and Woodgreen Avenue in Havant (Leigh Park). For those of you who like minute details and history (as I do), I have included, as an inset, a view of the notice attached to the building. Southern Water Services Ltd. came into being in 1989 with the privatisation of the UK water industry. Although the name 'Southern Water' exists today, ownership is a bit less obvious since the industry became more a way of making money than providing water and associated services. The probable age of the notice can be gauged from the fact that the STD code for Winchester became 0 1 962 on PhONEday, 16 April 1995. 200_P1040128_OL
