Totality

Totality was created from a photograph I took of totality during the 8 April 2024 solar eclipse viewed in Moose River/Jackman, ME using digital effects from Paint Shop Pro ® and Smart Photo Editor ®. The moon and the sun’s corona during totality are depicted in as close to their actual colors as possible. The black color of the moon represents awe and mystery since no words or images can fully describe the experience of totality; no matter how precise scientific explanations are, a sense of intrigue remains during totality. The white color of the corona represents peace and hope as the solar eclipse allowed everyone present to forget the divisiveness and violence that plague the world. The landscape is flooded in an abundance of red representing love and joy, both attributes that are badly needed today. At the same time, the sky is filled with an abundance of tan/gray to represent unity to commemorate the large number of people who came together for a common purpose, demonstrating there is still hope for healing in this torn world.
The scattered splotches of greens, blues and purples and bleaching of the trees were added to depict the Bailey’s Beads effect in which surreal shadows are cast as the moon makes its final move to eclipse the sun in totality in which the only sunlight reaching the area passes through the moon’s topographical features. The wavy section of reds in the upper right hand corner represent the very distant horizon to the north that had retained a dark orange-red color during totality because of the solar maximum during this eclipse. Last, the extruding blocks were added to represent the multi-dimensional sensory experience totality elicits when physically present.

I will forgive their
Iniquity – and their sin
Remember no more.
Peace be upon all
From that momentous day he
Was raised back to life.
Having risen from
The dead, he has made us born
a new creation.
The thorns and the cross
Expressions of God’s love
Bring life eternal.

Amidst clouds of smoke
And pyroclastic rivers
A new day awakes.
Like the morning dawn
The sky shimmers and glows with
Red luminescence.
Ash coats and lava
From volcanic eruptions
Renew the Earth’s face.
Fuji's sacred fires
That both destroy and create
Sustain life's cycle.

Note: Created from the abstract pattern of a curtain at Worldmark by Wyndham . The vibrant colors represent the joy and vitality of life. The yellows represent sunshine, the reds represent blood (the substance of life) and the browns and ochres represent the clay of the earth from which we were created. The yellow bar represents the linear time of our life experiences on earth while the yellow circles represent perpetuity and eternity of our spiritual existence to come because of the imperishable nature of life.

_______________
Sanctity is the Light of the World,
The reflection of God Who dwells within it.
It is virtue, holiness and love.
It is patient and compassionate –
unstained by evil and violence.
It is the inspiration and hope of all
who desire the " holy place [of God]" [Psalm 24:1]
with " robes... [washed] white
in the blood of the Lamb. " [Revelation 7:14]
_______________
Sadly today's world that immerses itself in bloodshed, violence and unimaginable acts of evil doesn't recognize the virtues of sanctity because " it cannot accept [H] im (God) ... [and] neither sees [H] im nor knows [H] im. [John 14:17]
May the world accept God, discover His love and one day "[t] urn from evil... do good; seek peace... " [Psalm 34:14] and "[m] ake every effort... to be holy. [Hebrews 12:14]
Gates of Remembrance/Resolute Determination

White Plains, New York -- 20 October 2023 and 17 October 2023, respectively.
The Gates of Remembrance sculpture was created by American artist Rita Rapaport (1918-2003) in 1992 to "memorialize the suffering and death of millions during the Nazi era from 1933-1945." The sculpture features five panels (depicted in the black & white collage) depicting the Hebrew word "Remembrance" and torn fabric with a prisoner's number (top left), barbed wire that represents concentration camps (top right), broken tablets that represent the "Ten Commandments" (bottom left) and a Torah scroll in flames that represents Kristallnacht (9-10 November 1938), the beginning of the Holocaust (bottom right).
The handwritten note in Hebrew and English was left by an unknown Jewish person. It reflects resolute determination in the aftermath of the worst slaughter of innocent Jewish people (1400+ on 7 October 2023 when Israel was attacked by several thousand Hamas terrorists whose barbaric acts are antithetical to true Islam) since the Holocaust (1938-1945). He or she defiantly wrote: 5784 years and still here! We aren't going anywhere.

Also on this World Day of Photography, my deepest condolences go out to Andy Rodker's family and friends. He was a large part of this community and a great, caring person who loved to share the beautiful scenic pictures of his home country. He will be greatly missed and forever in our prayers and memories. Enjoy eternity Andy even if it breaks our hearts here.
As a wonderful photographer, it is also ironic he should pass on this day of all days.

And the rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will see it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and between every living creature among all flesh, which is on the earth. [Judaism: Bereshit 9:16]
I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind… [Christianity: Genesis 9:13-15]
The rainbow is a safeguard for the inhabitants of the earth that they will not be drowned and the Milky Way is the door of the heavens and the splitting of the heavens will begin from it. [Islam: Ibn Abbas]

Spreading Light: 2022 Kazakh Interfaith Summit

St. Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church, White Plains, NY
It was encouraging to see Pope Francis demonstrated courage to attend the 2022 Kazakh Interfaith Summit despite objections from the dying minority that cling to the archaic and obsolete “one true religion” view that is antithetical to God's love, limits the power of the resurrection, monopolizes Jesus Christ’s saving grace and has caused so much human grief and suffering through the ages. During this conference, participants referenced the historic “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together” signed by Pope Francis and Sheikh Ahmed Al Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar in Abu Dhabi, UAE (February 2019).
During his closing speech, Pope Francis reinforced Point 10 of the summit’s declaration – “We note that pluralism and differences in religion, skin color, gender, race, and language are expressions of the wisdom of God’s will in creation. …any incident of coercion to a particular religion and religious doctrine is unacceptable” [1] – declaring “extremism, radicalism, terrorism and all other forms of violence and wars, whatever their goals, have nothing to do with true religion and must be rejected in the strongest possible term.” He also called on “world leaders to ‘abandon all aggressive and destructive rhetoric which leads to destabilization… and to cease from conflict and bloodshed…” [2]

Freedom Tower: Completed 2013. Height with Spire: 1776 feet. Architect: David Childs.
Oculus: Completed 2016. Architect: Santiago Calatrava.
Note: Due to a member question about the bottom right portion of Freedom Tower, the differences between the rest of the building as well as the appearance of smudging in the sky are optical illusions caused by the thin clouds in the sky that were faintly reflected in the sun-exposed section of Freedom Tower. The second optical illusion is caused by the dark shadow of the adjacent building that obscures the visible interior beams in the sun-illuminated section and interior office views. As this is a negative image, the shadow-impacted section is the opposite color (white vs. black) and the white wispy clouds appear as black smudges. In reality every section of Freedom Tower is alike.
