Descent of the Holy Spirit

19 May 2024 73 63 519
Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church, Rye Brook, NY When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit ... [Acts 2:1-4] And as [Jesus] was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him... like a dove... [Luke 3:21-22] Descent of the Holy Spirit : The Holy Spirit descends upon Mary and the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday. [Third Glorious Mystery of the Rosary] To Jesus, son of Mary, We... supported him with the [H] oly [S] pirit (Ruh al-Qudus) . [Qu'ran: Al-Baqarah (The Cow) 2:253] …the Spirit of God (Ruach Elohim) was hovering over the face of the water [a] nd God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. [Torah: Bereshit (Genesis) 1:2-3]

Totality

16 Apr 2024 77 62 440
Totality was created from a photograph I took of totality during the 8 April 2024 solar eclipse viewed in Moose River/Jackman, ME using digital effects from Paint Shop Pro ® and Smart Photo Editor ®. The moon and the sun’s corona during totality are depicted in as close to their actual colors as possible. The black color of the moon represents awe and mystery since no words or images can fully describe the experience of totality; no matter how precise scientific explanations are, a sense of intrigue remains during totality. The white color of the corona represents peace and hope as the solar eclipse allowed everyone present to forget the divisiveness and violence that plague the world. The landscape is flooded in an abundance of red representing love and joy, both attributes that are badly needed today. At the same time, the sky is filled with an abundance of tan/gray to represent unity to commemorate the large number of people who came together for a common purpose, demonstrating there is still hope for healing in this torn world. The scattered splotches of greens, blues and purples and bleaching of the trees were added to depict the Bailey’s Beads effect in which surreal shadows are cast as the moon makes its final move to eclipse the sun in totality in which the only sunlight reaching the area passes through the moon’s topographical features. The wavy section of reds in the upper right hand corner represent the very distant horizon to the north that had retained a dark orange-red color during totality because of the solar maximum during this eclipse. Last, the extruding blocks were added to represent the multi-dimensional sensory experience totality elicits when physically present.

Las Vegas, NV Note: Created from the abstract pattern of a curtain at Worldmark by Wyndham . The vibrant colors represent the joy and vitality of life. The yellows represent sunshine, the reds represent blood (the substance of life) and the browns and ochres represent the clay of the earth from which we were created. The yellow bar represents the linear time of our life experiences on earth while the yellow circles represent perpetuity and eternity of our spiritual existence to come because of the imperishable nature of life.

Note: human was created from garbage and litter consisting primarily of discarded plastic from an air conditioner, broken yellow plastic pieces, red and white plastic bolts, a discarded piece of wood, copper piece, broken light bulb and piece of a discarded cardboard box. The colors and shades of black, brown, red, white, and yellow represent the races that comprise the diverse fabric of humanity. Each color is indispensable and integral without which there would be an unbridgeable loss of beauty. The pixellation represents the fragility of life and the smile face represents joy when all peoples of every ethnic background, gender and religion of the one human race live in peace and harmony.

Rouge

12 Jun 2021 65 46 478
Mamaroneck, NY Abstract work created from various discarded objects – pieces of a broken incandescent light bulb, a microwave door with intact patterned glass, an electrical outlet cover and wires. The title denotes the color red from the French word rouge . The dominate red color in conjunction with the various circles represent enduring love (in fact according to the Urban dictionary, a rouge “is the sweetest person you will ever meet… a person who will always love you…” regardless of circumstances and individual flaws, someone whom should be cherished and something worth pursuing), lasting health, which is so relevant during these pandemic times, and eternal life. The abundance of red also represents passion, strength and fortitude. At the same time, the outlet cover represents a means of release since it is within each of us to unleash love, passion and good and in doing so, beautifying the planet in the same way cosmetics beautify the face. Also, considering rouge, is also a powder used to polish glass, metal and gems, the metal microwave oven door with its intact glass and the diamond pattern in the center of this work are fitting. At the same time, the splashes of earthen tones and green reinforce the concept of life and its preciousness. Last, the happy face represents the joy red represents through love, vitality, and good health.

Dark Winter

28 Feb 2021 59 55 490
Mamaroneck, NY Note: Created to represent the dark winter of 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has led to record hospitalizations, numerous shutdowns, and most tragically of all – 1.05 million deaths worldwide and 248,000 deaths in the USA from 1 December 2020-27 February 2021 alone, figures that don't account for excess deaths related to COVID-19. This digital work of art was created using pandemic-related garbage (a discarded face mask and rubber glove) as well as various other pieces of garbage found over the last month that was placed over the darkest and dirtiest of snow I could find – so black in some places one wouldn’t recognize it as snow. The abundance of black and gray represents the darkness of this winter and the collective mourning the pandemic has brought. The white snowflake and splotch of white snow in the upper right corner represent hope, the flower symbolizes remembrance of all who lost their lives during this pandemic and the splash of reds serve a duo purpose. They both represent "toxic" snow since COVID-19 is clearly toxic to our well being, as well as health and life for we will overcome, we will prevail, and we will LIVE! Valentine's Day Derivative

Cela

09 Aug 2020 72 65 620
Mamaroneck, NY Note: This abstract was created using discarded garbage and litter consisting of plastic debris, a rubber spacer ring, red foam heart, broken tiles and lima beans. When I created this work, I intended to break numerous rules, starting with the title Cela , inscribed on one of the broken tiles, which is derived from the French contraction Ce + là , which means “That.” In this case “That” is 1 John 4:8 and 16 – “God is Love.” Accordingly, the heart that represents God’s unconditional, unfailing and unending love based on Psalm 136:26: “Give thanks to God… for His steadfast love endures forever” was converted into a colorless heart because in reality His sacred heart is immaculate and pure and untarnished by even the slightest ill, evil and negativity, the black spacer ring that represents light and eternity maintained its color despite conventional views since black too as does every color, connotes brightness and goodness. The cross represents God’s great sacrifice that broke the chains of death while the widespread red represents God’s passion and love exhibited so clearly when He gave his life for each and every one of us and the power of the Holy Spirit that guides, inspires, purifies and sustains our existence – “And there appeared to them tongues as of fire…” [Acts 2:3] “to purify…” [Titus 2:14] and , based on Psalm 51:10 “create in [each of us] a clean heart." The faint wavy flows symbolize rebirth to eternity based on John 3:5 “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” All of us are body (75% of water) and soul! The lima beans represent seeds of faith based on the parable found in Luke 17:5-6: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea’ and it will obey you” while the simplicity proclaims the words of Matthew 11:30 – “ [M] y yoke is easy and M y burden is light.” Finally, the face represents the blissful attainment of eternal life in the presence of God captured by Psalm 16:11: “In Your presence is fullness of joy.”

COVID-19 Reality

16 Feb 2020 77 96 969
Larchmont, NY Note: This composition was created to promote awareness and provide images of precautionary supplies. While N-95 rated face masks (the only face masks manufactured to protect against airborne pathogens) are not needed at this time in much of the world, hand sanitizer and good hygiene are a good idea to prevent its spread as well as that of seasonal flu, the latter whose casualties rarely make the headlines. The rose, heart, and color scheme were used since Valentine's Day, the international day of love, falls in February and because love should be the pre-eminent approach to everything.

Renewal

07 Oct 2019 59 83 815
Mamaroneck, NY Note: I created this image using discarded garbage that consisted of broken glass, broken glass, a pair of spoons and other debris. I created the title since the two spoons represent the fatigue and mental anguish we can experience during trying times symbolized by the chaos of the broken plastic and glass, and selected the main rouge/red color to represent humanity, life, renewal and most importantly love. The circle represents continuity and the eternal nature of life while the white colors of the broken glass bits represent light and goodness. The fact we are all saved through universal salvation – goodness to be celebrated since the darkness of death cannot keep us within its grasp is sufficient reason to rejoice represented by the tiny happy face.

Valentine's Day Love

13 Feb 2019 79 75 1168
Mamaroneck, NY Note: This image was created using vibrant red colors, and garbage featuring hearts. Each piece of garbage featuring a heart was replicated so that no heart is solitary and alone since love relies on another to love. The numerous spacer rings represent eternal love and the face represents happiness since when there is true love, happiness is perfected and blissful. Happy Valentine's Day to all!

Broken Vinyl

Mamaroneck, NY Note: I deliberately used "white space" to go against conformity and chose the colors to project warmth. I also bled the colors from the center of the broken lp so the mind could complete the circle that is missing the right edge.
