Begun in 1744, but never finished, the Alamo was intended to be the the worship center for the Spanish Mission established near this site in 1718 (Misión San Antonio de Valero). It is famous, however, as the site of an important battle for Texas' independence from Mexico, a battle fought over 13 days in which around 200 defenders died and the mission was retaken by Mexican troops under the leadership of General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The site is now downtown San Antonio and is considered an official Texas shrine. Today is the 184th anniversary of the second to last day of the battle, fought from February 23 through March 6, 1836. We walked to the Alamo the first day we were in San Antonio on our recent trip. We walked there in the afternoon after we had checked into our guesthouse and again in the evening when we we saw it lighted. The inset photos are also of the Alamo, of the memorial outside the Alamo and of a cannon similar to those used in the battle of the Alamo.
