Trumpeter Swans in Flight

RHH
12 Mar 2010 2 1 652
There are large flocks of swans feeding in the fields south of the town where we live. I was out today and took some photos of them both on the ground and in the air. It appeared that the flocks were a mix both of Tundra or Whistling Swans and Trumpeter Swans. I believe the swans in this shots are Trumpeters. As you can see, the sky is rather threatening and by the time I finished taking pictures a storm had moved in and it was beginning to rain. Trumpeter Swans were hunted for their feathers and were hunted nearly to extinction in the early 1900's but have made a comeback and are quite common now. These birds can live to be as old as 30 years and often mate for life. There is some great information on Trumpeter Swans at this address: www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Trumpeter_Swan/lifehistory

Every night during the Olympics there is a fireworks show in the Yaletown area of Vancouver as part of the festivities there. If Canada has won gold that day, then there are gold fireworks that are part of the display. These three shots were taken on Monday evening, February 22, the night Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue won gold in the Ice Dancing Finals. The second picture shows some of the gold-colored fireworks that were part of the celebration that evening. Notice, too, the reflections of the fireworks in the windows of the downtown office buildings in the first and especially the third pictures. All these pictures were taken from the balconey of our daughter's apartment near Vancouver General Hospital.

Inukshuk are stone figures used by Indians in northern Canada and Alaska to herd caribou. This commemorative figure stands on the shore of English Bay in Sunset Beach. Whether the Olympic mittens are an official addition or a bit of harmless fun, I do not know.

Italian Flag at Olympic Village

In Explore February 20, 2010, #387, but not picked up by Scout. Thanks to Boshaft for finding it. For Valter. This was photographed from the Cambie Bridge in Vancouver overlooking the Olympic Village. Most of the flags were hanging on the sides of buildings, but the Italian flag was hanging above them all on this huge crane. We speculated that it was there because the last winter Olympics had been in Turin, Italy, or that some of the athletes had been daring enough to climb the crane and hang their flag there. Dennis suggested that perhaps the crane operator was Italian. You may take your pick of explanations.

In Explore February 23, 2010, #101. We spent yesterday afternoon and evening in Vancouver and it was a very profitable time. We saw some of the sights by night, attended the Flickr gathering on Hamilton Street, saw the nightly fireworks and enjoyed someof the excitement and busyness. This picture was taken from the Cambie Street Bridge and shows part of the Olympic Village and the geodosic dome of the Science World building which for the duration of the Olympics is the Russia or Sochi House.

Olympic Cauldron at Night

Olympic Flame at Night

The pillars of the Olympic cauldron are even more beautiful by night than by day. The arms appear to be lit from within and the contrast of blue and yellow light is impressive. In this shot the Olympic rings in the harbor can just be see at the base of the legs. The authorities have now moved the fence closer, have cut out sections of the fence and replaced them with plexiglass panels and have opened the viewing deck to visitors making it much easier to take pictures of the cauldron.
