As evening came on we traveled north in Big Bend along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive to our campsite at Paint Gap Hills. We had hiked here earlier in the day but only stopped for a few photos now.

This is the top of the Burro Mesa pour-off, a water-worn channel down the side of the mesa. It was possible to hike to the top of the mesa but required a rather long drive around and another hike which we did not do.

This was taken on our second hike of the second full day of our stay in Big Bend National Park. We traveled down the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive on the west side of the park, stopping at various places along the way and hiking at some of them. This hike took us along a dry wash to the Burro Mesa pour-off, a water-worn channel in the rock from the top of Burro Mesa, shown in the first inset. Here was the wash which was also our trail.

After stopping at Sotol Overlook we went on to Burro Mesa and hiked to the base of the mesa, to a place where water pouring off the mesa has left a worn channel. These cacti were photographed on the way to Burro Mesa Pouroff. The cactus in front is a Purple-tinged Prickly-pear and the cactus in back is a Chain Cholla.

Photographed on our hike to Burro Mesa, the cactus in front is a Blind Prickly Pear and the plant behind it is an Ocotillo. None of the cacti was saw were in flower, a bit of a disappointment.

This is a Chain Cholla, photographed while hiking to Burro Mesa. The grass in the middle of the arms is the nest of a Cactus Wren with the opening just visible above the cactus fruit. The resident of the next was not around.

There are three different Opuntia or Prickly Pear species in Big Bend National Park. This one, the Purple-tinged Prickly Pear we saw least often and was the most attractive. We photographed this example near Burro Mesa.
