Last week we hiked an afternoon at Hog Canyon Lake, only a few miles from our home and one of our favorite spots for a short hike. After hiking down to the lake we visited the falls. There was not a lot of water and that was still frozen, but the falls were beautiful. From the falls we hiked the cliffs on the west side of the lake and then watched the sunset. The lake was frozen and though we saw no one there were places on the lake where people had been ice-fishing.

These are the upper part of Hog Canyon Falls the morning we hiked there. The falls drop in stops over formations of columnar basalt and then the creek loses itself in piles of broken basalt at the base of the falls before reemerging at the edge of the lake.

This is Hog Lake or Hog Canyon Lake in the channeled scablands of eastern Washington, about a fifteen or twenty minute drive from our home. Its long, narrow profile, deep waters and basalt cliffs are typical of the many lakes in our area including the lake near our home. We have been trying to get out once a week for some hiking and this was our destination this week. We hiked about five miles with little elevation gain and having lost the trail ended up hiking all the way around the lake, not realising we were on private land part of the time. We have gotten into a kind of routine. We get out one morning for a few groceries, one day for hiking and otherwise stay home, going for a walk near home each day, weather permitting. The rest of the time is spent on projects of various kinds indoors and outdoors. Most of the parks, hiking trails, national forest and state lands are closed, but a few little-known places such as this are still open. We saw a couple other people but that was all and had a beautiful day. We thoroughly enjoyed both the day the wildflowers which were starting to bloom.

Hog Lake is not far from our home in the channeled scablands west of Spokane, Washington. We hiked around the lake when we were there and this photo was taken at the opposite end of the lake from which we started.
