The first evening we were in Zion National Park we hiked the short Canyon Overlook trail. This was the view, with the east entrance road, the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, winding up the canyon.

While at Zion National Park we camped outside the park and took photos of the sunrise as we drove into the park.
Wolf

|
These photos are all of animals we've seen coming into Yellowstone National Park from the east over Cody and through Sylvan Pass. Some of the photos were taken just outside the park, as was this, but all the animals can also be seen within the park boundaries and many of them wander freely in and out of the park, sometimes bringing about confrontations with those who live near the park. This wolf is the only one I've ever had opportunity to photograph though many of the other animals are seen near the roads and in the public areas of the park.
Grizzly Sow

|
|
This Grizzly Bear sow was photographed near Yellowstone Lake in September. She was digging for roots and grubs and would soon be hibernating. She paid no attention to the people had stopped to watch here, though many were out of their vehicles and far too close, in my opinion.
Bison Bull

This Bison was photographed near Yellowstone Lake along the east entrance road. I've not been able to identify the bird perched on its back.
Elk

|
These elk were wintering in the fields just outside Yellowstone National Park when we saw them. It is spring, so the males have dropped their antlers and many of the cows are pregnant.
Mule Deer

|
This Mule Deer (note the long ears) was photographed on a spring morning just outside of Yellowstone National Park as we drove into the park via the east entrance road.
Coyote

|
This Coyote was photographed as we traveled to Yellowstone National Park from the east. We've seen them in the park but this one was nearby. They are very common animals in the west.
Sylvan Pass

These photos are from Sylvan Pass, an 8,524 foot (2,598 m) pass through the Absaroka Range that enters Yellowstone National Park from the east. I believe the peak in the background is Grizzly Peak We came into Yellowstone from this direction in early May not long after the road had been opened for the season.
Sylvan Pass

Sylvan Pass, a high mountain pass that is on the east entrance road into Yellowstone National Park, had only recently been opened when these photos were taken. The west side of the pass has had some wildfires in recent years as is evident from this photo.

Taken near the top of Sylvan Pass in early May when the east entrance road into Yellowstone National Park had only recently been opened, this photo shows the end of winter at these high elevations (2600 m).
Yellowstone Lake

This is Yellowstone Lake as one follows the east entrance road out of the park through Sylvan Pass. The road first hugs the north shore of the lake and then begins to climb up through the pass.

Before continuing south along the east side of Yellowstone's lower loop we are going to see a few photos from the east entrance road which comes into the park from the city of Cody and the Bighorn Mountains through Sylvan Pass and along the north shore of Yellowstone Lake, a beautiful drive. This photo is taken near the western end of the road, not far from its junction with the main loop. At the junction there is a visitor's center, a campground and a small park village. The lake itself is huge and this is the lake in May when winter is just ending in the park. The road can be seen headed east in the middle of the photo.
Overlook Peak

Traveling to the east out of Yellowstone National Park, the east entrance road climbs sharply through Sylvan Pass. This is the view back over the east end of Yellowstone Lake with Overlook Peak in the background.

This is an autumn view of the north shore of Yellowstone Lake as one leaves the main loop and heads out of the park along the east entrance road. The road follows the north shore of the lake before climbing through Sylvan Pass and down again and out of the park to the city of Cody.

This is Yellowstone Lake on the southeast side of Yellowstone National Park. The lake is in a massive old caldera which apparently has a huge magma chamber underneath and could someday erupt. This photo was taken from the west side of the lake driving up to Lake Village.

Leaving Yellowstone National Park by way of the east entrance took us along the north shore of Yellowstone Lake, a massive old caldera and through Sylvan Pass (see other inset). We drove as far as Cody, Wyoming where we spent the night before traveling on to South Dakota. The dead trees in this photo, I believe, are from the 1988 fires that devasted the park.
