This dragonfly was photographed near Darwin Falls in Death Valley National Park and I believe it is a Flame Skimmer. If anyone has a better ID, though, I'd appreciate it.

Desert Dodder, also known as Strangleweed, Witch's Hair and Devil's Guts, is a parasitic plant that we saw several times in Death Valley. It usually does not kill its host but can do damage. It can be found in huge clumps that hide the parent plant and is made up of these weird orange hair-like tentacles.

These were blooming in the canyon through which we hiked to Darwin Falls on our last day in Death Valley National Park. They are the Beavertail Cactus, Opuntia basilaris.

This is the lower part of Darwin Falls on the west side of Death Valley National Park. The upper part can be reached only by scrambling up the cliffs, something I tried but which seemed a bit dangerous for an old man.

Darwin Falls is a perennial water source on the west side of Death Valley near the town of Panamint Springs. It is reached by driving a very rough road several miles to the trailhead and then by a short hike through a narrow canyon.

Darwin Falls is on the west side of Death Valley National Park near the town of Panamint Springs. It is one of the few places in Death Valley where water can be found year around. It is hard to describe the feeling of finding water, greenery and the coolness produced by the springs in a desert area.

Photographed along the trail to Darwin Falls, this, I believe is the Brittlebush, Encelia farinosa. It was one of the few wildflowers we found in Death Valley. There at the very beginning of March we were a bit early for most of them.

Photographed along the trail to Darwin falls in Death Valley National Park, I have not been able to identify this lizard. Perhaps someone can help.

This is where we parked our vehicle and began the hike to Darwin Falls. The falls are located west of the town of Panamint Springs, about a mile up the canyon from the parking area. I posted this, however, especially because of the unusual cloud formation.

This was taken in the canyon through which we hiked to Darwin Falls. The trail is about a mile each way and the falls come as a welcome surprise after the dry canyon. The area around the falls is cool with birds singing and lots of greenery.

Darwin Falls are located just west of the town of Panamint Springs near the west side of Death Valley National Park. They are at the end of a long canyon part of which can be driven and the rest hiked in order to see the falls. They are not that high, only 20 feet (10 meters) but are a refreshing change from the arid landscape of the park. They are named not for Charles Darwin, but for a local rancher and miner and are one of only four perennial streams in Death Valley.
