This Bison was photographed near Yellowstone Lake along the east entrance road. I've not been able to identify the bird perched on its back.

Photographed along the road in Hayden Valley on the southwest side of Yellowstone National Park, this bull Bison has been rolling in the dust. Hayden Valley is a wonderful place to look for wildlife and the other two photos are of a herd of Elk and of a Great Blue Heron.

We are touring Yellowstone, traveling now from Madison Junction where the west entrance road meets the lower loop of the main road and heading northeast and clockwise around that lower loop. The area has a few thermal features but not many but it is an area where bison are often found, such as this cow and calf.

Bison can be seen almost anywhere in Yellowstone. They wander freely and are often on the roads in the park as the second inset shows. A recent census counted nearly 5000 of them in the park. This bull was photographed near Tower Junction on the northeast side of the park.

After driving into Yellowstone National Park and finding no campsites available we left the park by the north entrance and spent the night near Gardiner, Montana. On our way back into the park the next morning we saw a herd of elk in a field along the road and stopped for photos. This was the bull of the herd and while we were watching some young bulls who were hanging around tried to cut some of his cows (see inset) out of his herd. He is eyeing them here and soon began to chase them away (see inset) and to bring back the cows who had strayed.

While in Denali we camped at the Sanctuary River and it was in the fields near the campground that this picture was taken. He looks a bit ratty due to the season, but was, nevertheless, a magnificent animal. The bugs must have been getting to him, though, since every few seconds he would do what I can only describe as a "shudder" trying to dislodge the mosquitoes and biting flies, I assume.

This is an older shot of a bull Bison, but one I had marked in my archives for posting. This animal was photographed in Hayden Valley on the east side of Yellowstone National Park. I remember people getting out of their vehicles to photograph him, but also remember thinking what idiots they were. They can be very dangerous.

Photographed along the road in Yellowstone National Park near Yellowstone Lake. They are massive creatures and rather mean-looking as well. I would not like to meet one outside the protection of the car.
