In Explore August 17, 2009, #437. Photographed on the Klahane Ridge Switchback Trail near Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. The following photo shows the foliage of this small but attractive orchid, which grows under forest cover on well-drained slopes. This was published in the April, 2011, issue of Orchids, the magazine of the American Orchid Society, in an article titled "Taking Aim."

This is the Bog Candle, very common in our area, but always a delight to see. This photo was taken last year on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. There are three varieties of this species, different only in the length of the spur that sticks out from the back of the lip. These are often found by the thousands in boggy areas and along roadsides where they stand out like candles. They are very fragrant also and the air will be perfumed by them for a long distance near where they are found. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/02/b...

Our day in the Olympics was misty and cool for the most part, though we had some sunshine at intervals. This picture was taken near the Hurricane Ridge vistor's center and looks west across the valley to some of the higher peaks which are barely visible in the photo. The title is, of course, taken from a song in J.R.R. Tolkien's, The Hobbit. We were hiking the trail at the end of Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park when this beautiful animal wandered into the area. In Explore October 10, 2011, #250. After a very busy few weeks I'm back at IMO. Enjoy the group but feel a bit out of my depth. I keep posting though in the hope of learning. This was originally posted on Flickr and at that time I wrote the following comments. Didn't even know whether I should post this. I have very mixed feelings about it, sometimes I like it and sometimes I think it's completely worthless. Thought I'd leave it to you to judge. This was taken on Hurricane Ridge In Olympic National Park on a day when we experienced very mixed weather with a lot of clouds and rain showers moving through very quickly. The flowers are Western Bistort, Polygonum bistortoides, a common alpine perennial in this area, with a few Slender Paintbrush mixed in, along with a few other wildflowers I haven't identified. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/09/olympic-nat...

One of the reasons we try to get to Olympic National Park as often as we possibly can is the incredible show of wildflowers in the park. This photo was taken along the Hurricane Ridge Road, one of the best places to see the park's wildflowers. The flowers in the picture include the Western Wallflower (yellow-orange), Sub-alpine Lupine (blue), and the Slender Paintbrush (orange or red). ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/09/olympic-nat...
