The Alamo at Night

We spent our first day in San Antonio walking twice to the Alamo by way of the riverwalk. We didn't arrive until mid-afternoon and walked there after checking into our guesthouse and then again after dark. The Alamo is one of five old Spanish missions in San Antonio and the site of an important battle for Texas' independence a battle that was lost by the Texan defenders of the Alamo. It is downtown San Antonio (the other missions are further out) and is closed at night, but beautifully lighted. The photos I've posed are from our evening walk and since I did not feel like hauling a heavy tripod around they are all hand-held. There are two insets of the city from the riverwalk, a pleasant place to walk in the evening, quiet, well-lighted with many restaurants and outdoor cafes available, and one inset of a carriage near the Alamo which can be hired for a tour of the city. They are available during the day as well, but I would be embarrassed to be seen in such a thing, and so we used our feet and bikes.

This is the San Antonio, Texas, riverwalk by night with one of the riverboats visible in the foreground. These boats can be hired for a tour of the city, but we do not like tours and so avoided them. All the night photos were taken by hand since i did not feel like hauling a tripod around.

The Alamo

Begun in 1744, but never finished, the Alamo was intended to be the the worship center for the Spanish Mission established near this site in 1718 (Misión San Antonio de Valero). It is famous, however, as the site of an important battle for Texas' independence from Mexico, a battle fought over 13 days in which around 200 defenders died and the mission was retaken by Mexican troops under the leadership of General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The site is now downtown San Antonio and is considered an official Texas shrine. Today is the 184th anniversary of the second to last day of the battle, fought from February 23 through March 6, 1836. We walked to the Alamo the first day we were in San Antonio on our recent trip. We walked there in the afternoon after we had checked into our guesthouse and again in the evening when we we saw it lighted. The inset photos are also of the Alamo, of the memorial outside the Alamo and of a cannon similar to those used in the battle of the Alamo.

San Antonio Riverwalk

One of the nicest things about the city of San Antonio, Texas, is its riverwalk. The walk follows the river as it meanders through the city, usually on both sides of the river, sometimes only on one. It is at the level of the river for the most part and the noise and bustle of the city seem far away. There are cafes and other businesses that can be accessed and bridges to cross from one side of the river to the other as in this photo. After checking into our guest house we followed the riverwalk through the city to the Alamo. All the photos are from that excursion and since I couldn't choose any one to post I just posted all the better ones.

This is the riverwalk near downtown San Antonio, Texas, a pleasant walk through the city that is for the most part below the noise and busyness of the city. The walk is lined with plants, flowers, gardens and statuary and is also a cool retreat from the heat of summer in the city.
