Pokeweed is a native plant of the eastern USA, these berries photographed at Bass River Recreation Area in Michigan. The plant and berries are toxic and become more so as the plant matures. The berries are useful, however, for making ink and as a dye, though the plant is seldom used either way today.

This is Amanita gemmata, the Gemmed Amanita, photographed in Wallace Falls State Park last autumn. Though very beautiful, it is toxic. Eating it causes hallucinations, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and there are even a few cases of death recorded as a result of eating this species.
