International Plowing Competition

"International" may be a bit pretentious, since all the teams and their owners are local, as far as I know, but the annual event is none the less worth attending for all that. The county we live in is reputed to have more draft horses than any other county in the United States, and that certainly seemed to be the case Saturday (April 16), the 70th time this event has been held.
The actual event begins at 11:00 am, but it is well worth arriving ahead of time, as I did, to see the horses being unloaded, groomed and harnessed for the event. Many of the teams are beautifully gotten up with elaborate decorations, braided manes and beribboned tails, and even the horses seem to know that something special is happening and to be impatient to get on with their business.
There are various classes, adults, ladies, riding plows, youth, best groomed and decorated, with additional awards for various aspects of the plowing. One goes, however, to see the horses, even mules and ponies (not there this year), and the fact that spectators are allowed to follow the plows and mingle with the horses and their owners makes the event even more special.
The day was changeable, with occasional sprinkles of rain, the sun breaking through at times, but mostly cloudy. That made the picture taking a bit more difficult, but, these are some of the pictures and a video of the horses, the plowing, the competitors, the spectators, a little bit of everything, not in any particular order, but all reasons why someone would want to attend this event if in the area.
Many more pictures of the competition and a video can be found here: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/04/2011-intern... .

Taken at the International Plowing Competition held in our area every spring. What a joy it is to watch these animals at work.

Went to the annual plowing match for a few hours Saturday. This match is held every April in Berthusen Park just outside the town where we live. This year there were nearly 20 teams of draft horses involved in the competition, many of them decked out in more finery than this pair, but all of them beautiful animals. Raising matched pairs and teams of eight horses and showing them or involving them in competitions such as this is very popular in our area.

71st International Plowing Match

This match is held annually in Berthusen Park just west of where we live. It is always well attended both by contestants and spectators and features teams of draft horses, most of them beautifully gotten up for the event. There are different classes for men, women and younger folk, for both walking and riding plows and even for mules or smaller horses. Prizes are given for the straightest furrow and other matters that involve actual plowing, but also for the best dressed plow person and best show harness. The horses are the main attraction, though, and are usually matched pairs with beautifully decorated harnesses. It always appears to me that the horses enjoy the event as much or more than the people - they seem proud of their appearance and eager to get on with the plowing, but perhaps that is only my imagination.
