I had to be a bit creative when visiting Mission Concepción is San Antonio, Texas, since much of the main building was covered with scaffolding. This is the bell tower just to the side of the main entrance.

Mission Concepción is one of five Spanish Missions along the San Antonio River in central Texas. It was built, along with the other missions early in eighteenth century. We visited all five missions on bikes, following the Mission Trail south of San Antonio. At the time of our visit they were working on the roof of the mission and there was a lot of scoffolding deliberately hidden by the ruined building in on the left in this photo.

Our main object in visiting San Antonio, Texas, recently was to see again the old Spanish Mission for which the city is famous. Beginning with the Alamo in downtown San Antonio, there are five old missions along a ten-mile stretch of the river. Previously we had visited these by car but this time, starting from our guesthouse, we went by bicycle. We rented bikes near the guesthouse and followed the riverwalk (the part of the riverwalk that connects the missions is known as the Mission trail) to each of the Missions. This photo and the first of the insets show the first of the four missions we visited that day (we did not go back to the Alamo), Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña. The third inset shows some of the flowers we saw along the way and the last inset my wife on her electric-assist bicycle. We had looked forward with eager anticipation to this part of our trip and were not disappointed. The electric-assist bicycles we used were a good choice and allowed us to enjoy the mission trail in a leisurely fashion, the weather was perfect and the missions were as beautiful as we remembered.

This was taken through one of the windows at Missions Concepción in San Antonio, Texas. The mission was established by Franciscans in 1716 and is still used today. It is located on the south side of the city of San Antonio and is one of five missions along the San Antonio River. Its full name is Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña.
