I had trouble identifying this one, but believe it to be a Collared Lizard, Crotaphytus collaris. It was photographed along the Potash Road near Moab, Utah.

This is a Long-toed Salamander, one of the Mole Salamanders. We found him (or her) in our garage, brought him in for a brief photography session and then released him outdoors. He is probably hibernating now. In the insets the long toes for which he is named can be seen as also the green mottling on his back, barely visible in this photo.

Photographed near Hidden Valley in Joshua Tree National Park we watched these two lizards, a Side-blotched Lizard and a Western Fence Lizard, fighting. Neither appeared to be injured but they certainly were not having a fridenly tussle.

We saw this little lizard near the Ocotillo Patch in Joshua Tree National Park. He was doing handstands when we saw him, probably by way of keeping cool in the heat. He would raise up his whole body as he is doing in the photo and then lower it again.

This Coachwhip Snake was the most exciting thing we saw in the ghost town of Ballarat, west of Death Valley. The Coachwhip is a long, slender, non-poisonous snake.

Thought I'd post some reptiles and amphibians today. This is a Painted Turtle that my grandkids found near our home and brought to show me. It is a common freshwater turtle that can be found across North America. Its name refers especially to the beautiful red, yellow and black underside of its shell only just visible in the photo.

Desert Spiny Lizard

If I have the ID correct this is the Desert Spiny Lizard photographed at Warm Springs Camp where we spent the fifth night of our Death Valley trip. Do not let the word "camp" mislead you, however. The camp is abandoned and the buildings dilapidated and we slept in our car.
